USMLE PART 1- Few facts about the changed pattern -
29-07-2008, 11:24 PM
Most of us have come to know about the changed pattern of the questions on part 1, apart from the reduced numbers of questions.
I think i was one of the first to take the test on the changed pattern. On the basis of feedbacks from past test takers i found some differences. First of all you rarely see 1-4 line questions, most of them being around 8-10 liners; the longest an 18 liner ( I really counted). Most now have pictures- either CT scans, gross pictures or histology slides and yes, some really weird ones. On one of the questions i was confused whether it was a gross picture or a histo slide. Funny i guess.
The Board is now really interested in pathophysiology than ever before.I had gone through the 2nd part medicine book( CVS and Respiratory) and found it to be really helpful as were the Uworld pathophysiology questions .
Brand new are the audio visual questions. Upto now i think most have got only one the whole exam, most of them being heart sounds. I stumbled upon a very good Heart sound animation while going through the internet. Ill post it for you to download as soon as possible.
Apart from these there are not much differences. Definitely the questions are longer.
From my experience i thought the thing that matters most is time management. You tend to make many silly mistakes even if you know the answer. So having time to revise is really helpful. Trying to solve those ever impossible questions is a waste of time. The chances are you wont pick the right answer even after spending a considerable amount of time. Spend your time getting right the questions you are supposed to get right.
I hope this proves to be a helpful feedback to all the future 1st part test takers. Ill be glad to provide you with more informations.
