Medicos halt work at Manipal Hospital - 21-07-2007, 04:44 AM

Medicos halt work at Manipal Hospital

POKHARA, July 20 - Doctors and employees of Manipal Teaching Hospital at Pokhara indefinitely closed the hospital from Friday protesting the manhandling of doctors.

The relatives of Rudra Prasad Thapa, a patient from Lamachaur, manhandled acting medical superintendent Dr M L Panhani, chief of orthopedic unit Dr N K Sinha, Dr Padam Khadka and Dr Amit Ray on Friday. They had blamed the doctors of not letting them know about the treatment process.

Soon after the incident, doctors and employees halted work and gathered at the hospital premises. "All the employees except those working at the ward stopped work," said Dr Panhani.

Janardan Bastola, the secretary of employees' union, said that they would not resume work until they were ensured a secured environment.

Thapa was admitted in the hospital to remove the steel plate placed in his arm six years ago. "The doctors removed only two among six plates and they did not inform my relatives in time," said Thapa.

However, Dr Panhani said they could remove only two plates as the possibility of bone cracking arose while removing the plates.

Meanwhile, issuing a statement on Friday, Dr Panhani said that they would not resume work, except emergency service, until they were ensured a secured environment. "We apologize to the patients for the inconvenience caused," read the statement. - The Kathmandu Post

It happens often in Manipal,Pokhara, why so? Recently, it happened In Obg Dept as well, in which Hospital Paid Heft money to Patient party silently, also in medical department, 'coz exchange of CBC report of one patient, got treatment of other patient of same department, also paid hefty money silently, how many more silently.... only Manipal Knows......

I am not against of Manipal or Doctors working In Manipal.....
But somewhere Manipal has to think about..... seriously as I know thro' my frens Manipal works with a very very very limited Doctors.....

Sorry Guys

thanx for ur concern
i donot think thats the good way of analyzing the situation
doctors especially our dean sir has got threat in the phone to pay money by the SPIDER GROUP otherwise he has to face the consequences as that of hemang dixit. thats the criminal activity.
also in anther case of orthopaedics, one of our seniormost doctor and our MS and ther faculties are bitten by some so called patient party, simply becz they didnot take out all the plates due to bone weakness. and it was the same patient who had been operated free in the past in our hospital.
now its up to u to judge the situation as a medicos...........or even as a layman...........is it right?

Thanx khushidr for bringing up the issue....... nd of course for so much of individual details some of which even i was unaware of.

Regarding this case and ur comment - It happens often in Manipal :

i think it happens everywhere that treatment decisions do change - sometimes drastically - in the operating table.
and it was probably the right decision to leave the plates in situ rather than having a broken bone. and this complication of plating probably occurs often in every hospital doing good number of plating.

more serious aspect of this case which u do not seem to have realised is the atmosphere of violence against medical professionals.
was it right in part of patient party to manhandle the treating physicians. even if there was a gross negligence (which in no way was present in this case) is violence justifiable? aren't there proper authorities to take action against those at fault?
and this is a dangerous trend catching up in nepal these days........ be it everest nursing home, butwal hospital, norvic, birgunj, koshi and many more.
nd god forbid someday it may happen to khusidr urself.
this trend of getting compensation by beating physicians and vandalising hoapitals has to be truncated by any means.

khusidr, by saying ......."It happens often in Manipal"...... if u r silently approving this trend -deliberately or by ignorance- u r probably mistaken in ur judgement.

another aspect - of paying hefty money silently

i believe this represents nothing other than the existing atmosphere of fear among hospital authorities nd is a direct consequense of violence against medical instutions and professionals.
it seems more reasonable to pay a particular (hefty) sum of money than to let the hospital be vandalised.
take any similar example and u will see that the hospital has paid everywhere many a times for no reason.
it happened in patan, norvic (nd im not sure - in B & B : the hefty money amounting to in order of crore)
khusidr u seem to ignore this aspect again by blaming just manipal.

number of doctors:

i m not quite sure exactly how many you mean by a very very very limited Doctors.....
but manipal does have quite a lot of faculties, a good nouber of medical officers and interns for its 550 beds nd the existing patient load.
i agree that there had been scarcity of medical officers for few months recently following the formulation of 'chikitsak parichalan nirdeshika ' by the government.
and i also admit my ignorance regarding the standard limits of number of dctors with respect to number of patients so as to lable manipal as running with a very very very limited Doctors.... .

finally

its not just manipal that has to think somewhere...... seriously
its the whole medical fraternity in nepal

idiosyncracies and anaphylaxis etc keep occurring in medical practice and any physician can b a target if the system is such as now.

thanks for the reply bishnurath

But i think u must be aware what happened in Manipal recently..... lot of changes....... no one would have expect....

I told " how many more silently.... only Manipal Knows...... "

Actually Manipal gave a good reply by themselve

Dean is not only fired from Pokhara but fired from Manipal Group.....
Equally responisble person is MS.... he is fired too......

Just because of " how many more silently.... only Manipal Knows...... "

I am not against of any doctors or manipal

Sometime one should know how to confess mistake as well.... I m doctor too and i have posted meaning of sorry in Medical Profession... It means a lot
