DAILEKH, July 4 - Thirteen goats have died as of Wednesday after "eating decayed rice" that was dumped here at Chupra VDC by Nepal Food Corporation (NFC) last week, .
The goats had arrived at the place following locals who scrambled to grab tons of decayed rice while the grain was being prepared for disposal last Wednesday.
Goats belonging to Bed Bahadur GC and Jit Bahadur Shrestha of Gahatari village, half-a-kilometer away from the area where the rice was dumped, which had eaten the dumped rice, died due to infection caused by contamination, locals claimed.
Deep Bahadur Shrestha, district member of CPN-UML, informed that three of his goats had eaten the dumped rice and they died on Thursday. "Also my other six goats have fallen sick after eating the decayed rice, but they are not getting treatment," he added.
Assistant Chief District Officer Jhalak Subedi, however, claimed that the district administration was not informed about the problem as such. However, Veterinarian Dr Sharad Singh Yadav, in Kathmandu, informed that goats may die if they eat grains in large quantities. The major problem is that their digestive system fails due to lack of immediate treatment after consumption of such grains. Even edible grains can lead to such consequences if the animals eat such foodstuffs in large amounts, he clarified. |
