500 fall sick after taking fileria drug !!!!!!!!!! - 28-06-2007, 10:18 AM

PALPA, June 28 - Over 500 persons have fallen sick after taking anti-elephantiasis medicine, distributed by a team of paramedics in various villages in the district recently.
According to villagers, the number of such patients reached 500 as of Tuesday. A team had distributed the anti-elephantiasis medicines in Madanpokhari, Chappani, Barangdi, Pokharathok and other adjoining villages on Saturday.
"My daughter fell sick after consuming the medicine as the health workers didn't mention as to what time was suitable for taking the medicine," said one Keshav Nepali of Madanpokhari.
The patients have been admitted to Tansen Hospital, Mission Hospital and other health posts and private clinics in the villages for treatment.
"The locals, after taking the drugs, suffered vomiting, diarrhea and headache; while some even fell unconscious," said he.
According to doctors, it might be due to the improper timing of the intake of the medicine. They said that the medicine should be taken after having breakfast or lunch.
With a view to eradicating the disease, the government had organized a campaign to distribute the anti-elephantiasis medicine to residents of 21 districts last week. Elephantiasis, affects the limbs and/or other parts of the body, which become grotesquely swollen or enlarged, making it difficult for patients to move.
