| | Dharan doctor wins int’l honour A Nepali physician has been honoured for pioneering a concept that a physician should make door-to-door visits for effective treatment of kidney ailments.
Dr Sanjeev Kumar Sharma, who is associated with the BP Koirala Institute for Health Sciences here, was honoured at a recent annual meeting of the International Society of Nephrology in Brazil.
Dr Sharma’s report entitled “A Community Screening for Chronic Kidney Disease, Hypertension, Diabetes and their Management at Dharan” won the second prize in a global contest among physicians. The first and third places went to physicians from Germany in the event that was held on April 23. “I hope the recognition will help me in my endeavours,” Dr Sharma said.
The doctor from Jhapa is the only nephrology expert outside the capital. He has identified a number of cases of nephrology, hypertension, diabetes and heart disease after visiting people in Dharan. He said his programme is also being followed in Damak. He set up a separate department for the treatment of diabetes and nephrology cases in 2002 for the first time outside the capital. | Article Tools | | |

| | Re: Dharan doctor wins int’l honour I was thinking about this. Well, Dr. Sanjeev was doing something so different in our country that he was recognised by some foreign organisation but how less we are aware of what is going on inside our country and what our colleagues are doing in our field.
We have a forum here and these things are still missing. What can we do about this part where we are lagging?
One more question - the description was too short to understand what he was doing and what makes it so special. If some one can write more than that, please share. | | | | | | Re: Dharan doctor wins int’l honour Congratulations to Dr. Sanjeev,
During my short stay in BPKIHS 3 years back, i found him to be a dedicated and student-friendly teacher.
I agree with Warlus and would be happy if what was his work were made more clear.
Thanks. Quote:

| Re: Dharan doctor wins int’l honour congrats to sanjeev sir.
sanjeev sir has been doing this thing since some time now.
4 years back, sanjeev sir, who is also a rotarian, together with us rotaractors conducted door-to-door program for hypertension and diabetes screening in Dharan. we about 20 students went every saturday to dharan bazzar with height measuring stick, BP Mach., Blood glucose monitor ( we pricked almost everyone).. urine dipstick and all.. we had a form to be filled.. it worked both ways.. data collection for sir's research and also the screening for hypertension and diabetes...
After we went thru every house in dharan, the program doesnt run now.
Now we call it Kidney disease prevention program.. it runs daily, screeon ning and basic investigations are done free by the health volunteers (thanks to the MRs) and on saturdays we wake up at 6.. go to the different centers... where sir along with us do follow-ups... medicines are not free now.. but sir says that we will be able to provide them free if everything goes fine.
its fun working with sir. the respect we get is great... (and the food too!)
people also say that sanjeev sir is doing this for his research and to get fund.. yes, it is true... he will get fund too.. and his research will be appreciated.. but the primary goal to screen and treat initial stages of kidney diseases must not be ignored...
good going sir.. | | | | Article Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
