Polio Detected in Birgunj, Biratnagar - 14-10-2006, 08:30 PM

At a time when the nationwide campaign is on with the objective of eradicating polio from the country, a baby girl in Birgunj has been detected with polio.

The poliovirus has been detected in Phulmati, the 18 months old daughter of Safurdin Chihar of Alau VDC-4 in Parsa district, according to Dr Keshav Yogi of the World Health Organization (WHO), Polio Centre in Birgunj.

As a result of the disease, Phulmati is reported to have a feeble right leg. Doctors at the Centre had suspected Phulmati of carrying the disease some two months ago but it was confirmed only after the result of the stool test carried out in a laboratory in Bangkok arrived last month, it is learnt.

Meanwhile, 15-month-old Rahul Shrestha, who was taken to Rani Health Post in Biratnagar for getting his polio drops on Saturday, was found with polio symptoms, according to the District Public Health Office (DPHO), Morang.

"Because of sudden paralysis for the past one week, his legs are not moving," said Rahul's father, Kapil.

"He is a possible polio case," said Navaraj Subba, chief of the Morang DPHO. Subba has asked the child's family members to get the necessary tests done.

new cases of polio could b indicators of ineffective implementation and r bigger threats in themselves
endemicity of polio in boardering parts of india is another major problem
previous cases of polio in nepal were imported from these parts of india
whether the same applies to this new case(s) will have big implications

anyway, pulse polio has begun again
we can hope for the better

its imperative that polio immunisation in Bihar and UP of india b as efective as in nepal.
