The Bhaktapur Cancer Hospital has provided treatment to over 77,000 cancer patients during the last seven years. According to the hospital, which is marking its seventh anniversary on Saturday, has treated 18,000 new and 59,000 old cancer patients since it began services seven years ago as 15-bed Cancer Care Centre.
According to the director of the hospital Dr Rajendra Prasad Baral, over 18,000 patients received treatment under the OPD services by mid-July 2006 while nearly 12,000 patients were treated after admitting them in the hospital. According to a press release issued by the hospital today, 59,000 patients received follow up treatment during the same period.
The hospital provides chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery services to the patients. During the seven years, the hospital provided radiotherapy treatment to 2,364 patients, surgery to 869 patients and chemotherapy to the rest.
Currently, the hospital has 32 beds and aims to expand its capacity to 72 beds. It also plans to develop itself as a national-level referral hospital with quality and affordable services, launch palliative care and pain management services; cancer support, research and registry and tele-medicine services.
On an average, the hospital provides radiotherapy treatment to 70 patients daily and surgery service to 10 patients per week. Patients receiving OPD services have increased by over 50 per cent last year in comparison to the previous year, the hospital said.
The hospital was established with the initiative of Nepal Cancer Prevention Centre and assistance of Martyr Memorial Cancer Service Group after renovating the 100-year-old Chandralok Dispensary at Bhaktapur.
