PU MBBS Entrance Results Barred - 550 Students Hit - 03-09-2006, 07:41 PM

A total of 550 students who have appeared in the MBBS entrance examination conducted by the Purbanchal University (PU) are in a dilemma as the Nepal Medical Council (NMC) has barred the PU from publishing the results of the examination conducted eight months ago. The NMC is saying that it has not given due recognition to the PU.

Lack of co-ordination between the two bodies has not only affected Nepali students, but also hit some international students, who had shown keen interest in studying MBBS in Nepal, hard. Nine students from South Africa who had appeared in the examination, have already left Nepal after the delay in the publication of the results.

"PU had submitted an application seeking recognition, but the NMC is showing no interest," an administrator at the PU said, requesting anonymity.

Asked why the university conducted the entrance examination before getting recognition from the NMC, the administrator said all the other universities had done so in the past. "All the criteria have been met, but NMC officials are not looking into whether the university is fit to conduct MBBS classes," the administrator said.

PU has asked for 100 quotas, but the NMC is yet to respond to the request.
The publication of the result may be further delayed as officials -- the dean, vice-chancellor, registrar and rector -- have stopped coming to the office after employees and students launched a protest programme.

Dr Sri Krishna Giri, the registrar of NMC, said no university can conduct MBBS classes and exams without prior recognition from the NMC.

He said there are norms and procedures to be followed. "Until and unless the NMC gives the green signal, the universities cannot run the MBBS classes, let alone conduct examinations" he said.
