Medical personnel shortage hits Dolakha health posts - 15-08-2006, 01:59 AM

CHARIKOT, Aug. 14: Health posts in Dolakha district are getting closed due to the shortage of medical personnel. Health posts that used to run solely by the peons are closed following the cuts in seats by the government.

The health post situated in Khare village of Dolakha is closed for the last two months due to the absence of medical personnel, said Ram Kumar Joshi, who came to report the matter in Charikot. "Health workers are not attending the post and have been working carelessly,"he said.

The District Health Office, however, denied that the health posts were closed down. It said that the health assistants had been transferred and new health assistants appointed who would tend the health posts.

The lack of health assistants arose when the government cut down the seats four years ago during the period of emergency in the country. But the things have not changed when the situation has become normal.

There are 43 Sub Health Posts, 10 Health Posts, one primary health care centre, and Jiri Hospital. Out of 276 positions in these health centres, only 234 are fulfilled.

Due to lack of doctors in health posts, the patients are deprived of the health services and treatment.
