BIRATNAGAR, March 28 - At least one member of every family in Kopchheline of Pathri-1 in Morang district is suffering from tuberculosis (TB).
There are 300 houses of landless squatters in Kopchheline settlement and in every house there are one to four TB patients.
This discovery has challenged the District Public Health Office (DPHO) claim that the number of TB patients has decreased in the district.
“In some houses here the entire family has TB,” said Kailash Dhimal, who himself has TB, besides two members in his family. “At least one person dies of TB every month,” he added.
One Renu Subba here died of TB last week while two other members in her family are suffering from the disease.
According to Murari Acharya, chief of Pathri sub-health post, although the entire settlement is affected with TB, the DPHO and other organizations fighting TB have not paid attention. “Over 500 people in Kopchheline settlement could be infected with TB. However the concerned authorities have not taken any initiative to fight this contagious disease,” Acharya said. -
