KHOTANG—With its doctor absent, the district hospital has been unable to treat people for the past two weeks. Out of the three designated posts, the doctor has left for a workshop in Biratnagar and the hospital does not have a single trained medical professional. There are no doctors in Ainselukhar or Chisapani since the establishment of health centres—instead, health assistants are running these centres. In most of the district’s health centres, posts are vacant. The vacant posts include one medical supervisor, one medical assistant, nine health assistants, five staff nurses, two lab technicians, nine auxiliary health workers, five auxiliary nurse/midwife, eight rural health workers and 15 maternal child health worker. PALPA—He hasn’t studied radiography or any other profession and from the government office all he gets is a peon’s salary. But since July 2004, peon Karki has been working as the radiographer, dark room assistant and has even been taking x-rays. Karki, who continues to do the cleaning, says he has been interested in radiography for the past seven years. “I used to observe how the sirs used to do it and then they would answer my questions in simple language so that I understood how it is done,” he explains. SALYAN—Ever since the x-ray machine in the district hospital broke down, locals have faced a problem—they must go to Nepalganj for x-rays. The hospital called in an engineer from Delhi but he was unable to fix it and said it could only be repaired in India. This will cost Rs 80,000, money that the hospital does not have. Above are only some examples, out of thousands, that are the hard facts of nepal to digest. On one hand, the situation of Nepal is like above and on the other hand, Ministry of Health and Nepal Medical Council are proud for being able to bully medical students and new medical graduates. | | The Following User Says Thank You to Kanchan Dahal For This Useful Post: | | | New Member | | Posts: 13 Thanks: 0

| | The Following User Says Thank You to Kanchan Dahal For This Useful Post: | | | Senior Member | | Posts: 122 Thanks: 0

| | The Following User Says Thank You to Kanchan Dahal For This Useful Post: | | | New Member | | Posts: 13 Thanks: 0

Seeing some prints of news about the conditions of hospitals/health posts and research institutions of nepal, a layman understands that there are not enough doctors or professionals to carry out clinical works or research works. Those present are only centered in big cities like Kathmandu, Pokhara, Biratnagar, Chitwan, nepalgunj etc. In district headquarters and other parts there are no services or even enough medicine for minor illness. Situation has become worse due to extremism.
News information in dailies carries the messages that even the remotest areas have health centers and some even well equiped, but no one to run those facilities and start the clinical services. And, the fact of the absence of research works even in the centers which were believed to be the best, have shattered aspirations of newely produced doctors, medical students and most importantly common people who have strong faith.
Underdeveloped parts of Nepal and developed cities both do not have enough clinical facilities. Then, what do we have? What do we need? What should Health Ministry do? What will young medical graduates do? what?????????????????????????????????????????????? ??????????????????????? | | The Following User Says Thank You to Kanchan Dahal For This Useful Post: | | | Senior Member | | Posts: 1,380 Thanks: 106

kanchan,
With due respect and sympathy to your cause i beg to differ with you here.As i have written in my previous post of this thread, all doctors who have passed NMLE are equal regardless from the country they earned their degree from.
But as the thread has continued on this issue, i think you are sliding into intellectual manipulation. What relevance does your recently posted stories from Kantipur hold on this issue? Do you think there are less doctors in the remote areas because some doctors in ktm have partial feeling towards foreign grads, these two issues are poles apart and have no interrelationship.
There are already hundreds of unemployed doctors in KTM,for many of them even getting a volunteer job is a luxury, that includes many doctors from Nepali med.school itself and many of them are interested in going to the villages to work. But our government takes new doctors only once in few months and the process itself takes many months to finalise. There is also the issue of security, recently a friend of mine,a dr and the district health incharge was looted by maoists in his own room in a remote district so obviously drs would be reluctant to go there. Its the issue of management and not lack of manpower that is hurting our country right now!! Finally:The best way to show that u are good is on the exams brother.Get into the top five in the TUTH entrance, get through the Dharan PG exam, our whole medical fraternity looks at these results with interest. When we passed out as the first few batches of the private medical colleges in Nepal we too were jeered at, and as we proved our worth, the same people who critisized our colleges lined up to heap praise for us.That is the right way to do it friend rather than looking for an article here or a write up there to garner sympathy. | | The Following User Says Thank You to Love Nepal For This Useful Post: | | | New Member | | Posts: 13 Thanks: 0

In my first post, I had quoted "traditional mentality". I would like to elaborate it little more here, seeing its relevance. Well, to those who think examinations and entrances are the only gates to become best in nepal, I have no arguments. If our desires and determinations are there with us to do something useful for our nepal, by any means, I think that matters most for me. The question of becoming tops in exams have not necessarily solved all the problems that we are facing in nepal today and that will be insignificant to discuss here .
The main purpose of picking articles on kantipur was not to slide away from main purpose, but to raise question amongst ourselves. On one hand, we think that by being educated in our medical schools, we will become perfect doctors to solve all the problems, but on the other hand, there are challanges being faced everyday by our colleagues or people who seek help from us. If anybody picks those kantipur or other newspaper, almost everyday, similar news about health conditions can be found in different villages and cities of nepal. Those issues will totally give impression that there is nothing being done or tried to actually relieve our sufferings. Therefore, nepal still needs more doctors, doctors who can say why we have illness not only those who can say we have illness. | | The Following User Says Thank You to Kanchan Dahal For This Useful Post: | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
