Baby declared dead alive and kicking - 04-04-2007, 10:05 PM

Resurrection was unbelievable to a couple in Jhapa district, until they found their six-year-old baby fumbling back to life, Wednesday.

Yasodha Dangol, of Devidanda, Jalthal VDC-3, gave birth to a child on 28 March at AMDA Hospital in Damak. However, the hospital referred the baby to BP Koirala Institute of Health and Sciences in Dharan after the newborn was found unhealthy right from birth.

Following the incident, the Dangol couple took the baby to the hospital for treatment, where the newborn was treated for four days. "A doctor at the hospital pronounced the baby dead on April 2," said a close acquaintance of the Dangol couple, Dipendra Bhattarai, quoting Yasodha. "When the mother pointed out that the baby was still pulsating, the doctor said that pulses still palpitate for a few minutes even after a person is dead," added Bhattarai.
Disheartened, the Dangol couple returned to Jhapa to perform their baby's funeral rites at Kankai Mai river. "No sooner I reached the river bank, than the unconscious baby started wailing in my arms," Bhattarai quoted Yasodha as saying, "Surprised, I started breastfeeding the child," she added.
According to Bhattarai, the baby is in the pink of health.
Claiming that she did not take notice of the guilty doctor's name, Yasodha said, "It is amazing to know that there are even such doctors who cannot differentiate between those alive and dead." She said the baby is yet to be christened.
