‘Maoists & psychoses'
I am observing, analyzing and musing over the speeches given by Maoist leader, their behavior and the activity of their cadre in the context of election campaigning. Amazingly, I found most signs and symptoms of psychosis are reflecting on their political behavior. Psychosis can be defined as any major mental disorder of organic or emotional origin characterized by a gross impairment in reality testing; the individual incorrectly evaluate the accuracy of his or her and thoughts and makes incorrect references against external reality, even in the face of contrary evidence. It is often characterized by regressive behavior, inappropriate mood and affect, diminished impulse control. Examples of psychosis are delusions and illusion, hallucination, disorganized speech and behaviors. Since their political activity and behavior synchronized with the features of psychosis, I want to term it ‘Political psychoses. I want to make clear that this perception of mine is not motivated by any kind political and personal prejudice against Maoist and their cadre. Rather, it is meant to make them conscious that their behavior and activity are crossing the boundary of normality. Particularly, after election campaign got accelerated, the Maoist began to exhibit ‘political psychoses’.
They are having delusions of persecution (a false or morbid belief that one is being mistreated, harassed, or conspired against) for e.g., Maoist chairman Prachanda believes that US is conspiring against him to defeat him in Katmandu constituency no. 5 election and he and his other party leader believe that regressive forces are conspiring against them to defeat them in this election as a whole. He, his other party leader and cadres believe that other party’s cadre are mistreating them, harassing them and tempting them to attack on retaliation. They also believe that whole media is biased against Maoist and the media is trying to diminish the maoist impression in the public. They also made comment that civil society, media and government are becoming only mute spectator, when other party are increasing there atrocity over Maoist.
They are also having delusion of grandeur (the gross exaggeration of one’s importance, wealth, power or talents) for e.g. the Maoist believe that they have the majority support of Nepali people, all over the country there are only Maoist supporter. They are the only one who can give Nepal new direction, only they can build prosperous and peaceful Nepal. They also think that other party inside Nepal, regressive elements and other foreign imperial power like USA and India are worrying because of Maoist growing popularity and strength.
They are in illusion (misperception of real stimuli) because they think they are going to win most of the electoral constituency if conducted fairly & peacefully but they don’t know that most of the Nepali people have become frustrated due to their activity. They are not realizing that they are creating the environment of terror and fear to other party worker and general population particularly in the village area and their activity has raised fear to conduct election peaceful, free and fair manner. They think that there activity has good impact on the people and do not think it is necessary to change the behaviors of their cadre. And all of the above, the comrade Prachanda declared that he has already become president in the hearts of people and Nepali people wants to see him as a next president of Nepal.
They sometime have hallucination (sensory stimulation, no stimuli) also. That’s why comrade Prachanda could able to see the hearts of all Nepali people and be able to know what is inside their heart. Some time, some reliable source whisper in the ear of Comrade Prachanda and tell him regressive elements are planning to assassinate the top diplomats in the US embassy. Recently also some body told Maoist chairman secretly in his ear that there is going to be important political assassination within 2/3 week with a intention to create chaos in the country and disrupts the constitutional election.
They are exhibiting disorganized speech and behavior, for e.g. They say that they are the new forces and will build new Nepal, but their behaviors and activity are inspired and directed by the same old autocratic mentality. They don’t have consistency in their opinion, some time they say , they will accept the result of election whatever it might be, some time they say, they won’t & not necessary to accept the result if they loose, sometime talk about peaceful revolution and sometime raising arms again. Maoist leaders and cadres are showing paranoid and narcissistic behaviors too with extreme rejection sensitivity (can not tolerate their criticism). They can not fight back with reasons rather they turn combative and resort to attack other party cadres physically. They are showing their disorganized behavior by unrelenting attacks and obstruction to other party’s election campaign and not abiding by election code of conduct.
Mind you, most of the psychiatric illnesses are egocentric by nature, which means the person having illness would not be aware that he is having illness and thinks that he is completely all right and all his behavior and activity are normal. Rather such psychotic patient blames other to be abnormal and urge them to correct their behavior. Maoist are exhibiting exactly same thing, if u ask any Maoist leader about the activity of his cadre he would not be ready to accept that their cadre are doing any wrong job, rather they blame to the other party’s cadres for provoking & inviting confrontation. Saying this, they continue to violate election code of conduct and even the comprehensive peace accord by deploying their armed combatant in their election rally and program venue.
Despite all of these sign and symptoms I hope this is just correlating with a ‘brief psychotic disorder’(which last for about only 30 days and returns to full normal functioning ), will not be like ‘major psychosis’( which is difficult to treat and may become chronic). If Maoist continue such activity like major psychosis and constitution assembly election could not be held in free, fair and peaceful manner then the country itself is going to be ill.
We almost cured the major illness of the country which was in the form of Maoist insurgency about 2 yr back, though not completely cured and still persisting in the benign stage in the form of armed struggle in the Terai region. If we couldn’t treat it completely, it may develop into the malignant & metastasizing problem, which may spread violence and instability all over the country and endanger the existence of nation itself. Nepal might not cope the side effect of chemotherapy, radiotherapy and radical surgery in the form of national and international interference and subsequently our country Nepal may give her life and we Nepali people may loose our nationality and nations. The richness I achieve comes from Nature, the source of my inspiration. ... everything in nature is lyrical in its ideal essence, tragic in its fate, and comic in its existence.
