Medical Elective in Nepal - 02-11-2005, 10:29 PM

Medical Elective is not common in Nepal, however University has such provision. But Medical Elective is very much common in the western part of the world.

Anyway those who are interested to do the Medical Elective can use this forum to get the required information.

Ya, it is not only common but a compulsion too. In Germany a 4 month long elective ( locally called FAMULATUR) is one of the criterias to be eligible to take Final State examination. And electives in foreign countries are prefered. I know there are lot of guys from here who do it in various hospitals in nepal from IOM, KMH to Aampipal of Gorkha.
So, i personally think it would really be wise to offer an informative thread in our forum, like in old forum.
And I feel really sorry that foreign students are not allowed to do internship in nepal despite their crazy interest in nepal.

Rajiv, ususally there is no hard and fast rule for elective in Nepal. Usually Medical Colleges provides elective and they charge $25-$40 or even $50 per weeks depending upon their rules.

If anyone is interested they can contact the respective medical college and request for the elective. You an use List of Medical Colleges in Nepal and contact them through their email address. They will ask you some document which you can provide them easily and can fix your elective.

Thanx Pal. Why do they charge so much money ? One should get paid or get some kind of allowance because one assists doctors during elective. I think we should complain this to MOE.

many students come for elective study to MCOMS-MTH as well.
at the moment i m not aware of the amount of charge per student.

contrary to what rajiv said i have never seen an elective student assisting doctors........ almost invariably they do observation nd learn by asking questions to the treating physician nd some of them learn basic skills as well (i dont mean that they should b charged because of this, just mean that complaining to MoE may not b that logical)

elective at MCOMS is very flexible........ its usually tailored to suit the students interest
most of them manage to go for trekking in the annapurna trekking route.

YES,

We too have lots of electives in our Hospital TUTH - The medical education department does all the job ( correspondence, fees, Nepali classes, posting and all that). I'm not quite aware about the fees but I'm sure it is reasonable.

Anybody interested can contact Medical Education Department of IOM for TUTH/IOM. Nepal is one of the best country where western people can do their electives - no matter what the hospital they chose (tertiary care center will give better picture of all spectrum along with diagnosis and management.).

Best wishes,
mati
