Weifang Medical College (WMC) was founded in 1951, and it is now an advanced provincial medical college. For more than 50 years, it has combined medicine with other disciplines, including medical management, law, sciences, and arts. And it has established a multidisciplinary, multi-stylish, and multifunctional educating model. WMC now can confer bachelor and master degree, and it can also enroll foreign students. WMC now has more than 1 million square meters area, of which 30% is construction area. It has more than 800 faculties and staff, including more than 400 professors and 300 instructors with doctoral or master’s degree. WMC has 5 schools: medical school, public health school, professional school, international exchange student medical school, and school of clinical medicine of Ukraine. WMC offers 21 majors, including clinical medicine, dental health, nursing, anesthesiology, radiology/imaging science, laboratory diagnosis, preventive medicine, pharmacology, public health, labor and social prevention, marketing, law, applied psychology, statistics, biotechnology, and English. Master’s degree is offered in 17 different research areas, which include physiology, immunology, pharmacology, anatomy, histology, pathology, microbiology, internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, ophthalmology, otolaryngology, medical imaging and nuclear medicine, anesthesiology, epidemiology and hygienic statistics, sociological medicine and the public health management, and applied psychology.
Currently, there are around 500 full time graduate students, 800 professional graduate students, 11,000 full time undergraduates, 160 from who are foreign students, and 12,000 part time professional students. WMC can confer a master’s degree to professionals if they acquire enough credits, and can also confer a clinical medicine master’s degree. WMC is the only provincial college that can hold the nursing upgrading examination from associate degree to bachelor degree. WMC has one provincial intensively supported Department, and two provincial advanced Departments, two provincial core laboratories, two provincial advanced clinical Departments, two Departments with provincial leading-investigators, and eight province-level laboratories. WMC has also established one cutting edge educational technology center, one medical research center, one computation center, and one research animal facility. In addition, it owns several diversified intensive laboratories of morphology, functionality, chemical analysis, clinical technology, computation, and human anatomy. Totally, WMC owns around 8,000 educational and research instruments, which are worth around 70 million RMB. Its library maintains around 900,000 books, and 3,000 Chinese and foreign language journals. WMC has 10 comprehensive affiliated hospitals, 45 teaching hospitals, and more than 20 teaching sites. WMC publishes two periodicals named Weifang Medical Study Periodical and the Journal of Weifang Medical College.
Based on the mission of education, WMC is dedicated to and has developed high quality of education and research. Within the past few years, 50% master students continued to pursue doctoral study after they graduated. In general, 30% undergraduates went on for master degree study. In some majors, 60% undergraduates continued for master study. Also within the previous years, WMC attained 250 grants, including 4 national, and 36 provincial. WMC has accomplished 154 technological awards, 43 of which are equal to or above the provincial level. In addition, WMC attained 10 national patents, some of which have been purchased by companies, and turned into great economical and societal outcome.
WMC has also made a tremendous progress in international communication and cooperation. It has established college exchange programs with universities, like Colorado State University, US; Ukraine Medical University, Ukraine; Melbourne Royal Institute of Technology, Australia; and Saskatoon University, Canada; and so on. WMC had invited international experts, including Nobel Prize Laureates to teach in campus, and also invited them as visiting or emeritus professors.
WMC has implemented the strategy of “intellectual college”, and many excellent faculties have been recruited. There are three doctoral advisors, more than 200 master advisors, 28 bureau level experts, 18 province award winning young investigators, and 16 national stipend recipients. Two professors were selected to attend the 15th Conference of Chinese Communist Party, and the 9th and 10th National Delegates’ Conference. More than 10 faculties won national or provincial awards in teaching, ethics, humanitarian, and diligence. Besides, WMC itself has won numerous awards in areas such as community contribution, campus management, ethics, and meal and boarding.
“Sincerity, reality, diligence, and progress” has been the mission of WMC. 40,000 students have graduated since WMC has been founded 50 years ago. These students have drawn the attention of society and won numerous awards. Now, WMC is making everyday progress toward its new aim which is “to develop a more comprehensive and a doctor degree conferring medical university”.
