A new treatment for periodontal disease, involving the placement of a plastic-like material between the teeth and gums, could help patients heal faster and with less pain.
Periodontal disease is a condition that occurs when plaque on the surface of the tooth extends below the gum line and transports bacteria that can potentially ruin the tissue and bone that serve as a foundation for teeth. Additionally, it creates pockets between the teeth and gums where infections can thrive.
Scientists at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey in New Brunswick, developed the new treatment. Once inserted, the material breaks down and releases compounds to decrease discomfort and reduce inflammation.
Researchers report periodontists frequently try to part the gum tissue and the bone after taking out damaged tissue to help heal the area and restore the tissue. Rutgers scientists say their polymers can simultaneously serve as a treatment for infection and pain and a barrier to assist in the healing and regenerative processes.
