Men who smoke a pack or more of cigarettes daily are 40-percent more likely to be impotent than non-smokers, according to a recent study.
Researchers analyzed questionnaire responses from over 8,000 men ages 16 to 59 who were taking part in the Australian Study of Health and Relationships. They found almost one in 10 of the men say they had erectile problems lasting a month or more during the preceding year. Of the men surveyed, more than a quarter of the respondents were smokers, one in five of who smoked 20 or fewer cigarettes a day and just over 6 percent smoked 20 or more cigarettes a day.
Results show a significant association between smoking and erectile problems, which according to investigators became stronger the more cigarettes the man smoked.
When compared with non-smokers, those who smoked 20 or fewer cigarettes a day were 24-percent more likely to report difficulties maintaining an erection. Those smoking more than a pack a day were 39-percent more likely to report erectile difficulties. Researchers note, age and the diagnosis of cardiovascular disease also play a role in the likelihood of erectile dysfunction (ED). Moderate drinking, however, significantly cuts to the risk.
