Vaccines 'could prevent cancer'

Anti-viral vaccines could prevent one in ten cases of cancer in Britain, and a quarter in the developing world, a leading charity has claimed.


A report by Cancer Research UK, estimates a handful of infections may trigger around 1.8million cases of cancer worldwide each year. It says greater investment in new vaccines could help to combat them.
Cancer linked to infection by particular viruses includes cancers of the cervix, liver and nasal passages, as well as lymphomas, leukaemia and stomach cancer.


The report authors stress people cannot "catch" cancer. Only a small proportion with the cancer linked viruses develop the disease.

However, up to 18 per cent of new cancer cases worldwide are associated with viruses.

"Infection represents one defined link in the chain of events leading to cancer development," Professor Alan Rickinson, from the Cancer Research UK Institute at Birmingham University said.
"Knowing this helps us to trace other links in the chain and to understand how it all fits together."

At the moment from the age of 25, women are called in for screening every 3 years till the age of 64 and then every 5 years after that to monitor the transitional zone and look for an dyskariosis.
