Indian scientists have isolated two compounds from mussels, animals found in sea, that have been found to have anti-malarial activity, especially against the ‘falciparum’ parasite which accounts for maximum mortality.
The molecules, named NIO-1 and NIO-2, have been discovered by the scientists at the National Institute of Oceanography in collaboration with researchers at the National Centre for Cell Science, Pune and International Centre for Generic Engineering and Biotechnology here.
"Both the compounds, NIO-1 and NIO-2, present themselves as promising candidate drugs for malaria and may be used in conjunction with conventional drugs," a report in the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research's publication, `CSIR News' said.
The compounds, already patented, are cheap to obtain and can be prepared in bulk without killing the mussel, it said adding Mumbai-based company Shreya Life Sciences has been licensed to commercialise the drug.
Every year hundreds of patient die of malaria in the Tarai belt of Nepal. May this new finding bring new effective treatment agianst P. falciparum resistant strain.
