Medica you’re in the best place to discuss about your dream to become a doctor in the future.

Let me ask you one question - If your dad say "I can't feed you (family as a whole) after one month" then what will you do???

Will you:
  1. Leave your dad because he can’t feed you.
  2. Stop eating because your dad can’t provide you
  3. Take the alternative
  4. Ask you dad how you can help him to make food in your home

I guess I don’t have to tell you what you will do… well let me start with few things MBBS in Nepal is getting expensive each year just your tuition fee ranges from 16-22 Lakhs including your other expenses such as stationery, books, personal expenses, hostel or lodging, food etc then the total cost will be 25-30 lakh (including tuition fee).

~500 Nepali join Medical college in Nepal >1000+ go abroad. This is a rough estimation this data ma go higher. Each year ~1100 doctor are getting registered in Nepal Medical Council at present.

There is a neck to neck competition in every profession and Medical is not an exception, see this thread for more detail.

Bottom line: if your going alternative rather than medical profession because your parent can’t afford for your post graduate after your MBBS… tell me one thing if everything has to be done by your parents throughout your life than what will you do in your life???

Summery: well, if you get any opportunity to study abroad mainly UK or USA go for it rather than medical profession next is; if your have obsession for MBBS go for it, though future is getting tougher day by day. Your main concern was your master after MBBS well that you can do after earning money from your MBBS degree.

Medica, I do agree with them.

Don't worry about the future think about the present, Aree baba kasto manche timi sabai kura ahile nai hos bhanera kaa chinta garii rah ani.. sadhai bhari timro parents le timro sabai kura herne kura pani ta bhayena ni.. kasto manche timi MBBS pachhi master garne paisa ghara baata na dine bhanera k tension li rah...

You can do your PG after your MBBS when you earn or you might get an opportunity... who knows what the future holds for you...

Best of Luck

Crux Of The Matter - 13-11-2005, 01:19 PM

You seem to miss the Crux of the matter sis:

1. Money is a subsidiary not the one and only requirement for further study be it MBBS or any other. The best doctors in this country and even some of my fellow doctors had no financial muscle when they studied MBBS.

You might wonder if you realise how many scholorship seats are there in this country.Every medical college with foreign investment has to give 20of the seats and with nepali investment has to give 15% of the seats for scholorship to HMG.TUTH and BPKIHS have most of their seats for full or partial scholorships. Then there are so many seats from embassies and other sources. And from what i have seen the ministry exam is largely fair.In my college the best students were from the ministry seats(scholorship).

2. Even before you entertain the thought of how to study MBBS,you have
to think what do you want yourself to be doing in the future. If you want to be a doc.sure go for MBBS or else there are easier, shorter courses to do bachelor in any other subject. But let me remind you going abroad to study(though it fascinates everyone in nepal) is a really tough thing.I have met ppl in US who have come to study(mostly intermediate and bachelor level courses) and have turned into taxi drivers(not necessarily everyone) and those who are studying have a exhausting life, one guy told me(dai ramro sanga sutna paye kasto huncha hola jasto lagcha).coz unless you are a billionaire, sending money form nepal and studying in US is impossible and once you work and study,it becomes horrific(there are success stories also) but life becomes easier once you pass out.Coming here after a good bachelor's degree specially MBBS seems to be a lot lot better. As in residency u get paid and wont have to worry about the finances.

3. So,sis if you want to study MBBS and u have the gut feeling that u
are among the best,go for a government seat or TUTH or BPKIHS(I doubt the credibility of embessy seats).Say if u cannot cross the ministry hurdle but still want to study MBBS dont worry u fall among the majority and since your father will sponsor you that ends the story there.

4. Here comes the day of your graduation and you are now worried about your Residency(masters).Ok let me tell u,this should be the least of your worries, you could pass MBBS means you have the guts and the means to study further.Work for a while and support yourself,if you have the knowledge and the attitude to work, you will find a job, sooner than later.About a year of house job always helps. There are three options in front of you now.....
  1. GOVERNMENT JOB: If you really really feel for the ppl and want to help them and have the guts to tear through the muddle of beurocracy(there are ppl like that,am proud of them)..go for it.
  2. RESIDENCY IN NEPAL: TUTH (almost 40 seats), BPKIHS, NAMS, and now some medical colleges too...have lots of scholorship seats where they will pay you and teach you too.
  3. RESIDENCY ABROAD: There are two options:-
  • PLAB (not the right choice rite now).
  • USMLE (start preperation from intership, work, study during house job and earn to pay your application fees then give exam.....probably the best choice right now).Though USMLE does cost money but is not unmanagable and lots of my frns did it with out support from family.
DID YOU NOTICE ONE THING " IS MONEY THE MOST IMPORTANT THING HERE??" you need money if u want to study in india and private seats in nepal(where u have to pay lump sum) but as i said it can easily be avoided.

5. Finally if you are studying MBBS try to choose any nepali college rather than college anywhere else(I MEAN ANYWERE!!) because our course is quite modern(KU affiliated colleges have mac master system),there is a certain level beyond which you cannot fall and above all you can handle patients here and that too quite early. But a lot depends on the particular medical student too and ppl who have studied in other countries also have done well.

Best of luck for your future ahead,be good at whatever you study.Thats the most important thing.More important than what you study.

Dear Medica,

I hope you have got enough reason to pursue your career as a medic or to leave this profession for ever.

If I were in you condition I would go for it (I would think twice if you give two options but as you said you have strong desire for it, if you don't regret late on as many are doing, ), however Life is getting tougher day by day in every profession, wherever you go you have to be The ONE.

I hope this has addressed any of your concerns. Should you have any other questions or concerns, please feel free to reply and express those to us.

What is your basis for asking about scope???? if your asking in terms of jobs in Ktm it is horrible, recently there was a vacancy for 3 seats in internal meidicine there were 90 candidates and out of them only 7 have been seleceted after preliminaries two exams and now these 7 are facing interview after then only 3 will be selected.

Most of the people now heading out of the valley, mostly medical colleges, few goes to NGOs/INGOs, few are heading as a teacher in Nursing college, HA college.... and soo on

Basically life is getting tougher day by day. By the time you graduate it will be very difficult to get the job unless and until your very very good.

There is always a place for those who are excell in their part.

Currently more than 500 student enter medicla college in Nepal more than 1000+ head abroad.

More than 1100 hundred doctor geting registered in the Nepal Medical Council annually.

Obviously, getting job has become very very tough.

Regarding sponsership, most of the medical college will give you if you wish to go for the basic scinece i. e. none clinical (which is less preferred now might not be available after few years).

Few hostpital (Medical Colleges) out of valley are currently sponsering but its getting saturated, and you need to have good relation with them.

Look medica, if you dig the whole you will land up in the mud.

If you still need help do ask us.

Best of Luck

Hi,
Medica has started a great topic. I got an opportunity to look myself after my graduation.
Doctor - Highly respectable job yet in Nepali society is the dream of many enthusiastic students and their supporting parents.

I am wondering why this job is being saturated. I am speaking in terms of the health statistics. When we compare Nepal with other country we have very much poor health manpower. Doctor to population ratio is very much high in our country. I decided for MBBS through my interest and 'scope' which I saw(May be its a mistake)

Thanx for making me aware of the situation ahead. Let's hope in coming years Nepal once again will be a peaceful country. More opportunities for us - Work in rural areas, Uniform distribution(Not only Kathmandu!!!)
Let's hope this.

I would love to hear from my seniors. They really help me.
