How to choose a Medical College - 08-02-2006, 09:58 AM

This is most difficult part of the medical campaign. This is very important from the point of view and sensitive in defferent aspects. There are few things that, we think you should run quickly go through it However there is no such hard and fast rule to grade the colleges. This is very long term evaluation process. Your future depends up on you If you are good enough you can do well in any college even though college environment also play a major role for your future career. Despite the fact that the college which you think is not good enough in due course it becomes the best one. You never know what the future holds for you so with the colleges, although we would like you to have ideas about the following things:-
  • NMC Affiliation
  • Academic activity
  • Hospital/Hospital equipments
  • Patient flow
  • Exam Performance of the Students
  • Student Activities
  • Accessibility of IT
[break=NMC Affiliation]
NMC Affiliation
Each and every country has its own medical governing body that regulates the academic qualities of the different institutions and doctors of the country. Nepal has its medical governing body named Nepal Medical Council (NMC). NMC give temporary and permanent affiliation to the college. NMC has its many aims, and objectives. One of them is to check the basic infrastructure of the Medical Colleges and then give the NMC registration with recognition that they are capable of running medical college. The doctors who have studied in the NMC recognized college can attend for the exam of NMC to take the practicing license which is must. So it is must to know whether the college you are going to study is NMC recognized or not.
[break=Academic Activity]
Academic activity
We are in the twenty first century. The Nepalese doctors are appearing for the practicing license of Britain and America . And they are getting with the outstanding scores. That could be due to simply hard work. To get neck to neck to the doctors qualified in USA and Britain is to have sound academic activity in our own College. Some of the academic activities that students benefit could be
  • Sound departments and academicians (to provide the better input to the students)
  • Regular classes and tests
  • Regular Workshops
  • Field works
  • Orientations about the research activities and Computer technology
  • Seminars on the current issues of health with reference to the world and Nepal
  • Publications: The Journals, Periodicals and others are extremely important
[break=Hospital infrastructure]
Hospital/Hospital equipments
This is obvious that there must be Teaching Hospital that should fulfill the criteria of NMC. This is one of the must things that you should invariably look for. Medical subject is not an abstract that you study and think. There must be the cases. The better the hospital, better the cases you will find and of course study about that. This is not a thing that you compromise.

The Hospital equipments are the tools that medical professionals use both for the diagnostic and therapeutic purpose. Nowadays, they can also be used for the purpose of prognostic purpose. So if the Hospital is not equipped, there will not be diagnosis. If there is no diagnosis, there is no treatment. Therefore whole purpose of medical science will land up with the failure. That's why the colleges/its Teaching Hospitals must have basic Hospital equipments.
[break=Patient flow]
Patient flow
You may have big hospital, hundreds of beds, sound diagnostic facilities and of course best academic environment but if you don't have patients that are worthless. That will be exactly like that of empty vessels which produces loud sound. So, you have to see the patient flow of that hospital. Better the patient flow, more the cases you will get and wonderful chance to learn. That doesn't mean that they are the guinea pigs. Just to have cases can be more than enough because you can see and illustrate the hall mark signs and symptoms. And of course there are lab investigations that will teach you a lot. The next thing is the treatment pattern and its response. So get the information about that. The best way is to go the Hospital and see the situation. That will give you more idea. You can also ask the seniors/Doctors about this.
[break=Exam performance]
Exam Performance of the Students
This is the thing some people tend to think but it has nothing to do with the college and hospitals. Though some sort of lacking in experience could be reflected in the students' performance but it cannot be considered as the indicator in at least our view.
[break=Student activities]
Student Activities
This is the activity many people hate especially authorities of the medical colleges. That is absolutely rubbish. The students must be active not in the politics that is seen in some of the government colleges but in the other academic and extra activities. It is good if the students are having their own society or council and doing the activities. The students can themselves organize the health camps, blood donation programme, field works, relief works, competitions e.g. sports, literature etc., and interaction programme, talk programme etc. This is the time the students should develop their multidimensional career.
[break=Availability of IT]
Availability of IT
As we know, we are in the twenty first century we must have access to the Information Technology. There are online journals and indexing systems where we can consult the research articles. The information of the medical is quite mercurial. So you need to get update your knowledge. That is possible only when you have IT access. The latest editions of the books can hardly include the information three years later. So it is the IT that keeps you live update! Get to know about this in a college you are going to study.
