The Thalidomide tragedy was caused by a drug that was prescribed to pregnant mothers to treat morning sickness. One of the enantiomers of thalidomide is a safe and effective medicine; unfortunately the other enantiomer is a powerful foetus-deformer. If chemists had known this at the time, they could have seperated the two enantiomers and prevented the tragedy. |
