So long.......Krishna - 23-04-2008, 10:00 AM

He was eighteen. Frail. Exhausted. Not bloated but obviously swollen. It was my first day in the unit. And of all, this chap caught my attention for no apparent reason. Sometimes you know, I’m forced to believe that there exists some link, kind of connection I think, between two beings even before they know each other. Some divine play, may be.
The boy had Henoch- Schonlein Purpura, a disease of small blood vessels which could, as complications, have some grave consequences on one’s kidneys and guts. Surgery was contemplated. He underwent it the very day. He indeed had perforations in his intestines.
The outcome looked good, however. As days rolled, he improved better. I would change his dressings everyday, taking more than ample time. And suddenly, one day he would deteriorate acutely. His swollen face would be glaringly visible. His pain, unbearable. I still remember the day when he constantly pleaded for death rather than suffer ever increasing pain. Defied his father. Ignored me. And what not?
And then there was this one day when he seemed a totally different personality. With his hair cut, face washed, he looked a completely changed guy. “I’m not feeling even the slightest of pain today, doctor saab”, he said. Kept talking to me for a long time.
However,I was posted for only one month in that unit. Unfortunately, should I say? How I wished I saw him going home a cured lad before I left the unit. It didn’t happen.
I was enjoying my Orthopaedics posting for already almost a week then. Received an SMS from a friend. It read,” krishna passed away”. I was struck speechless. Out of nowhere. As if someone from my own family had died. And what more, I had gone to see him that very morning. Happened to be the last one. I don’t know if I should feel lucky to have gone to see him that morning; I really don’t know. That day somebody lost a son. Somebody, a brother. Somebody, a patient. And I lost someone whose tie with me I am still not sure about. But he meant a lot to me, who was more valuable and whose relation was more deeply rooted than all these. Of that, I am dead sure. But then, I can’t but console myself saying LIFE GOES ON. It has to....
