I didn't meant to demoralize them, I know everyone wants praise whatever they do its human nature. They were in KMC and never worked for KMC patient and all of a sudden for a girl (I beg your pardon, I wish her speedy recovery, Im not personally against her) school mates made them to work for fund rising things.

Why don't we think about other poor people dying each day because of lack of proper medicine, why don't we ever think about them who want to do some investigation but don't have enough moeny, why don't we think of those mother who give birth to a child and no one is there to care for, why don't we think about those who are found sick on the way and brought to the ER and no one is there to care for.

Why didn't this people think about it before. I know I have shouted a lot about this topic I am sure at least for ego shake they will do some charity work and I want that.

The Film Festival is finally over. All the movies shown at the festival were great and the fund raising event was successful. We can do something if we want to do. The festival proves it. Congrats to all the members behind the event. We got an opportunity to watch finest movies at the same time helping a cancer patient. Its a noble work. Keep it up guys and once again congrats..............................

Whereas we are aware and have our sympathies for everyone who come to our hospital and are not able to avail the services because of financial problems, we would like to assure you that we would do whatever we can for every needy one the first opportunity we get. As regards this fund raising programme, it is for our good friend, Carmelita Srivastava (wrongly spelt before). And if caring for a friend is selfish, then we are selfish. I mean it has to be someone you love and care about unless you realize that even one random cancer patient makes such a big difference to your life. True, there are other needy ones, some in more serious illnesses than she is... but if we have the heart to do it for our friend... we would do it for yours and anyone else's for that matter. What it has taught us is to be more compassionate to people like her who are in need... obviously she did not ask for it and we didn't need to go through all this trouble if we were happy with the unfair world we live in.

The fact is, we have tried to make it easier for you to donate... i mean, you don't have to if you don't want to... but if you can spend money to go and watch movies at theatres why not watch one for a good cause... it's not that expensive and the movies have been watched and approved by at least a dozen of us... they are bound to teach you something at the end of the day.

And let me just clear one more thing: NOT eveyone who studies at St. Xavier's is well off... but no one from St. Xavier's would have minded the fund raiser if it were from some xyz institution...

Lastly, I'd like to say that while this might still not be a very satisfying explanation for why we are doing this for only one girl and not for all the poor (like we want to), we would be ready to contribute to any such ideas if you come up with any... but I was brought up to believe that everything started with something and the customary the friend in need is a friend indeed.

Like I said, you don't have to participate if you don't want to... but certainly we would not like to be called selfish...
hey srijan...what a great reply..
you addressed all the issue and with a great skill..
wow..keep it up yaar....its great!!!

Re: Fund raising film festival .. - 05-10-2007, 11:37 AM

guess its a little late to hop in (was busy with managing the things) but hope this will answer most of ur queries...

Who is she:-the program that we r organising is for a Carmelita Srivastava(Choudhary), age 22 yrs. she is a good friend of ours with whom we studied our I. Sc in St. Xaviers college. Now she is doing B.A. from Metro college in baneshwor, (in scholarship)......though she cant attend the classes due to her condition...she has been managing to go and give the exams.

Cause:- since we were in I. Sc. she was having a heart problem(??? i dont know what....didnt understand then n its too late to ask now). according to Dr. Regmi her cardiologist...she had to undergo surgery but there was very less chance of survival so she opted not to.....
this heart problem led to low bp, weakness, and other problems......i havent recorded her bp above 80/55....normally it is around 70/45....i dont know how she is managing. once i got an automatic bp recorder and it pumped upto 130 and she fainted....she couldnt bear the pain. so we never pump over 90...its always enough.
few years back...she had a surgery for appendicitis...and she was anaemic...so she was prescribed haematinics. she says that she wasnt really anaemic but there were some other problems and the drug she was on helped in precipitating her condition...( i too dont know much about these things as at that time i was preparing for mbbs and was a little out of contact with her)
last year only....then she disclosed it to few of her closest friends that she was suffering from ALL(acute lymphocytic leukaemia) one being me.......
during this year she has tried almost everything from allopathy to homeopathy to yogas......... and ayurvedic medicine of kunfin suited her most and had better compliance.....she cant go to allopathy as her body cannot handle it.......i used to laugh at her during colleges that she would be bhoosh after taking a cetamol tab...and now i see how frustrating it can be.....she cant handle those powerful drugs at all.....
now her condition is deteriorating fast....she faints 2-3 times a day.....goes to seizures....she used to have nose bleedings... now she is starting to vomit blood....her eye sight is getting poorer every day....she is in pain almost anytime but she is fighting hard....she walks and goes to places...does small chores when she can.....shes stubborn but guess thats helping her....

treatment:-
she believes that kunfin has been able to cure many ALL cases and will hers too......and though i dont believe much in this...we dont have any choices left....psychological aspect should also be counted i guess. (she doesnt have much faith in hospitals and medicines as she had some very bad time dealing with irresponsibility shown by us.......sorry to say this but guess its like that in many places in nepal...very poor service and helchekrai...)

so what is her chance of survival?...
guess practically it is nil....coz the only thing now that can treat her would be bone marrow transplant...for which we are counselling her and she has also gone for some tests in our pressure(which is very hard for her as she has to draw blood for every little tests and it is very painful for her).....but guess she cant go for that too....coz she has an existing heart problem...her bp is never maintained and most importantly it has less chance of success and in her case...almost nil....blood transfusion is the only thing left which may prolong her life by some months....which she has yet to try....and she wont be doing it until needed.....she doesnt want to lose hope before fighting....

so why are we collecting money for a gone case u may ask.....but guess if u were in our place u would do that too....
she is a friend of ours and she needs our help.....from caring and looking after her.....she needs some financial support too.....
right now they are not in a very good financial status....yeah they have some money saved but it isnt going to be enough...tomorrow anything can happen to her...even blood transfusion is a costlier thing.....so we the friends of her from xavier are collecting this fund to provide financial support to her....whenever she will need...for performing tests..or for her medications or anything she may need during emergencies.
yeah if u r thinking what if the money collected were to be in excess...then dont worry it wont go to anyones pocket...it has been decided to donate it to Richa Memorial Fund which is providing scholarship to needy students in St. Xaviers from this yr on. we r involved in that too.....

Where else is this program going on?
Everywhere where our friend of Xaviers are. yes we have done similar shows in IOM (Sicko), NMC (Numafung), BP, Bharatpur, Nepalgunj, KUMS( its going on...Sicko),etc.....its about to be done in IOE, White house etc and friends who have gone to america are also donating as well....

So why u are donating?
well u may say we dont know her...its just xaverians who should be donating....then the simple reason is we are very few in no. and we alone cant collect a large amount of money.....so we thought of organising a fund raising program.....
the main theme of the program was that u wont be feeling bad that u r emptying ur purses for someone u dont care the hell for...... as most people do.... when they go home after donating and check their purses back.
we wanted u to buy the tickets so that u feel that u r donating...and as well as get the worth out of the money u r donating...guess 50 rs. for a film is not too much to ask for when u can spend 100 rs in gopi or more than 150 rs in jai or kumari....and for films u cant miss.....( we have gone through lots n lots of movies before putting these movies on the list......they were one of the best in their own field (except for 1408...it was there because peolpe want to see films like that just by thinking how good it is...a crowd gatherer...but it wasnt that bad...was it???)if u've missed them then better watch it by urself...except for those nepali documentaries...u wont find it in market.) (yeah greater nepal is being screened in wtc tom, saturday.... if u've missed....12, 2, 4 n 6 pm...dont know the price)

yeah n the other aspect of the program was that u could donate for her if u would like... as much as u wished even 5 rs.... not to be counted in the tickets....which no one i think got the message....but guess it was part of our mistake as we couldnt convey the message more clearly.....

but anyways i would like to thank all the people who came to our show and most probably enjoyed it and helped us in our cause.....
Though there wasnt much crowd as we had expected due to the sports week going on...i believe we did our best to entertain those remaining behind....
we will be publishing how much we have collected and will be donated to her within this week.....after we do this thing in duwakot too if we can( couldnt collect as much as projected )....and in the mean time u may donate if u wish after knowing all this.... if u want to.... to anyone of us as listed in the notice board .....as u might have guessed by now we dont want to force u if u dont want to.....its all up to u...
thank u all for ur support

I am a grad from KMC. I just wanted to say that "u guys r doing gr8 job". Always keep ur head high up. This is just the begining........despite of ur hard work and noble deed u will have to listen to many criticisms and have to answer them too. For me this activity of urs does not need any criticism it needs only appreciation!

For those who consider this fund raising activity as an act of "selfishness" i hope the following 2 adage makes some sense:

a) u must first learn to crawl before u learn to walk (this is the best any medical student could do!)

b) a person educated in mind and not in morals is a menace to society (so u guys from kmc r safe........the ones without any moral values for them the clock is ticking..tik..tik..tik.........)

Keep up ur best efforts and hope the patient gets the desired treatment.

Yes, I also agree with both Buckmister and Khushboo.
Hope our Batchmates and of course we will come with some more creative ideas regarding helping the needy ones on their priority basis.
But no doubt that they are doing great job and we should be proud to have such friends.

i would like to thank u all for showing such tremendous concern for all the poor and needy people coming here in kmc. everybody must have felt bad seeing these people but i guess there is very less that we can do for all of them. the only thing that we can do is help them on the spot when we can....things such as collecting donation for them is something beyond our reach....we simply cant collect such large amount of money we'll need just by conducting program here in kmc......unless you choose 1 of them and help him.... but then there are 100s of them, arent there. so whom to help??? but as i know we are doing things like that now and then.....guess the only thing that we've been wishing for is universal health care as shown in sicko.....but until then....keep helping the ones u can
