GOOD BOOKS MAKES GOOD DOCS!

Dear all,

I wanted to put my opinions here regarding our books at KMC.
I think good books makes good doctors , (clinical practice too) and for this library is the best place to have good books, as many good medical books are too costly for everyone to have. So library needs to have ample amt of good med books and few subquality books (just to let know of the other side too!) for issues. What I saw at KMC Clinical library is that we have huge amt of indian books and substd books (i am NOT telling indian books are not good) in the issues section but most of the good books either less in number and even if in adequate number, they are older editions. Newer editions are very few and are found only for reference. So what are we supposed to get from this? Either read sub_std books or get older edition of good books or just refer (have a glance) of later edition of good books?

How can a college suppose to produce good doctiors when the college doesn't allow better books for students issues (circulation)?

For example, Harrison, considered a very good book is 2 in number (laterst edition) in our college library, BOTH JUST FOR REFERENCE! We can't take it home to read! Older editions are there but not much even to take home. Mostly ref! i think putting new editions in ref only and not in issues section is jufair for students and even bad prognosis for the college...

Suggestion to college library: Buy latest edition of good books and then put some in ref (1 or 2) and rest for issues! Afterall, Good books makes good doctors!

Hope i get many healthy discussions in this regards. I would happily notify our library for better suggestions.

Cheers!

DocteurX

Vivek, KMC

i prefer to have my own set of books libray should have enough reference book and CDs/DVDs for interactive learning i thik you show this thread or discuss with him he might have the answer for this and the problem may be you college don't want spent money on books - poor management, books may have been ordered havn't deliver yet, your faculty members or the student may not request librarian to buy useful books of their interest...

or your faculty members and friends may have requested to the librarian but your managemnt may not show the interest.. c'mon dude your studying talk with the librarian and please don't forget to update us about the view of the librarian and the management.

i certainly go with vivek's idea. the books in the kmc library aren't that enough, u know. few good books-only for reference-so can't take home and read. those who can read in library it's ok but those who has habit reading in their homes, then it's trouble .moreover as vivek rightly said all good books couldn't bought single handedly.
i remember the incident of basic science, there was only 2 books on clinical orineted anatomy, moore, and we had to wait for months.. really for months to get the book to read,,, that's not good u know,

only complainin doesn't help out but if we talk to librarian and acknowledge the issue time on and on, then may be it'll help

hope u talk to clinical librarian vivek

Thumbs up good initiative !! - 20-11-2006, 05:41 AM

hi DoctorX,

it is so very nice to read your suggestions for the improvement of library faculty for us. after reading the post , i had a talk with the librarian and he shared his views with me about ur posts. i will not be able to write all , but lets focus on the important messages.

lets know our library ( how books are ordered and brought here )

1. first of all here twice or thrice a week, library meeting is held where hod, and key persons from all the department come and discuss about the use of budget of library towards books and other infrastructure which incluedes computer facility, salaries, book cases etc.

2.a decision is made by hod, and principle about which books are needed by the student and they are made as a tender.

3. the book shop giving highest percentage of discount , is selected for the books offer.

4. then , they give the latest edition and bring from India the remaining books if not available in stock.

5. these books come to library, kept in store , categorized and entered properly according to library rules.

6. these are made available to students as reference or issuable books.

then, we use it.

After knowing this, we should keep few things in mind about the books-

1. it should be new edition.
2. useful for many students not few.
3. it should be well protected as reference and issued will proper rules to get it back safely

your ideas for good books should fulfill these categories , and
for getting good standard books,
proper persons should be contacted, not librarians only. so, as we see this process in totality , lets hope that our vision for creating a better library comes true, as here we are already getting a nice comfortable and friendly environment here, lets make it better.( philips )

ya, it is completely incomplete...........................lets add our views .......

and remember to live with passion

Hey guys comeon, you guys have now almost spent two and a half year in KMC. Haven't you yet got any idea about the KMC inner problems and processes to make complains? Complaining to librarian is all waste of time. Any problem in Academic or Managemant section???, then just contact the Principal or get to the Chairman. Only this way your problem can be solved. Going to the librarian and talking is ........ you know what I mean. This way your complains will reach to the concerned person only when you are ABOUT TO COMPLETE YOUR INTERNSHIP!!!!
So, go to the concerned person and put down your complain, that too in an official way. Talk to your Class Representative, get a written letter with the signature of the whole class. You guys have come up with some spirit to solve this problem and we 7th Batch will co-operate too. I will get you the signatures in the letter from my batch (though I know the books will be here only we get to the internship,) but atleast the upcoming students will get the facilities.
We had tried this before but to tell franckly there was lack of spirit in us. Only few voices rose up and thats ganna do no help. Moreover, the seniors didn't co-operate and without the senior's help it was impossible. But I see a spirit in you guys. So move on.

thanks Raaz dai,

I will talk to our CR and then let you know abt it...
I also want to talk abt this with whole class, thjough it seems difficult, i am thinking of an idea to do it...hope it works!

I am very much interested to use the library to its best use, whatever be the situation, whether like this (not bad) or better!!! But i definitely want to make it a lot better resource ,for everybody, including me...hehehe...

Hope to get more and more suggestions to make our library better and also to use it more effecively.

I think we also need to discuss abt:

1. Electronic resources for medical students , online (which is sufficient , if internet is easily accessible and ample number of computers are there), and offline, so that students can have quicker access to knowledge.

2. Better use and practices of libraries, examples can be sought from other libraries... , eg. British Council lib, Americal Lib, Awon Lib, or ony other...

3. We can extend this forum for effective reading techniques too!!!

And Thank you Sushant for the valuable info... and best of luck for exams...

Sincerely,

DoctorX
