New KMC Magazine - Lost Tradition in the Torn Out Pages - 23-01-2008, 12:34 PM

Lost Tradition in the Torn Out Pages

Whenever a work is done in the field of publication it is invariably assessed by the readers. Obviously for the latest issue of KMC magazine most of the reader would be in the KMC beside this few copies might be available in the other medical colleges and offices elsewhere. But the majority of the reader would be associated with KMC. And I am sure most of the senior batch would not scan the pages with the interest the way that would have been if the editorial team had maintained the legacy.

Reader would dislike the most about this issue:
  • Legacy of “Sanjiwani” has been torn out.
  • Missing profile for outgoing batch.

Foremost things they changed the traditional name “Sanjiwani” which is already known to most the medical colleges as KMC Student’s College magazine and the next missing profiles for the outgoing batch. Why this editorial team thought that published their profile has not been justified in their editorial. As it is written in the Editorial – “Everything varies from its predeccessing magazines” is true, it doesn’t’ have the touch of KMCian through as it used to be in the “Sanjiwani”.

The word tradition means "to hand down" or "to hand over." Tradition is a beliefs or customs taught by one generation to the next, it is a set of customs or practices and also a broad religious movement. However, on a more basic theoretical level, tradition(s) can be seen as information or composed of information. For that which is brought into the present from the past, in a particular societal context, is information. This is even more fundamental than particular acts or practices even if repeated over a long sequence of time.

A tradition is a practice, custom, or story that is memorized and passed down from generation to generation, originally without the need for a writing system. The legacy of old generation to the new is passed on over the days. That’s how a legacy is maintained.

Why do we follow the tradition, it’s because we have a culture of caring people around us. The legacy of caring has been changed in the KMC through this new magazine, what if our country name change from Nepal to something else, what if every year we change the name of KMC to something else. Few things are not meant to be dynamic and same with the “Sanjiwani”.

It is customary in the most of the college’s souvenir that the profile of the magazine contains the outgoing batch. VI & VII batch are the outgoing batches, and surprisingly we don’t see them. It wouldn’t have hurt much more than modifying “Sanjiwani”.

In the chaos of superiority, this new magazine has lost the touch of the KMCian and the interest especially to the senior batches. Every work has strength and weakness judged by the third person, if we keep on doing things without considering confounding factors it does pay in the long term. May KMC junior do not repeat this mistake in forthcoming issues.

In the midst of darkness a great light is being born. It is not a light that is visible to the outer eyes but it is one that can be felt within the heart as the light of hope and of new beginnings has been started by IX batch. This light promises to replace the despair and heartache that are so prevalent in this issue and it also promises to replace the misuse of power and abuse of autonomisity too.

In order to create a more well-rounded reputation of KMC Student’s magazine with the best interest of all KMCian in mind, IX batch has created an Editorial Board along with the aim of rejuvenate the Legacy of KMC Student’s magazine “Sanjiwani”.

This may be perceived as wishful thinking by those whose hearts are heavy with the disparity brought about by this magazine. It may be perceived with skepticism by those influenced by the clear and present anger and hatred that beats in so many hearts toward others who hold different values. Nevertheless, the time is coming when the hatred and anger will be replaced by something different. It is this time that every heart is awaiting and it is this time whose light must be held to in the midst of darkness.

We wish IX batch all the success in their endeavor to bring back the spirit of KMC.

predeccessing spelling is wrong or my English has become poor I think juniors has become too smart.

It is sad to know that they changed the name and missed outgoing batch profile. Not every change is good for, I think this batch doesn't care about other batches, feel like they are arrogant.

At the same time I am glad to know that IX batch is coming with SANJIWANI spirit. All the best to them.

What!!!!!!! A publishing batch has come out with their profile and saying a college magazine? How can it be? I think they don’t know the value of KMC spirit. Editorial board must take the responsibility of the disparity they should come up and give a clarification. I have some questions:
  1. Why did you change the name of the college magazine sanjiwani to something else?
  2. How do you justify publishing your profile in the magazine instead of outgoing batch don’t you care about them?
You might be coming out with some anticipated answers
  1. We wanted to do something different or We wanted to have some change or We didn’t like the name Sanjiwani or we didn’t wanted to follow our seniors or we disliked their work and so on.
  2. There is no certainty that our profile will be published by our junior when we will be outgoing batch so we did or we took advantages of publishing batch or what our seniors have done for us who cares them or we believe in “I” not us.
Can we have a clarification from editorial board please ?

When finger is pointed after doing so many hard works instead of recognition it pinch a lot and this might be same with you. When you are saying it is a college magazine it must have the spirit of KMCian. You cannot do the way you like when you are representing KMC. Remember tomorrow you will also be a history and how would like to be remembered that’s count a lot.

For some whose name has never been published in any papers/magazing/journal it must have been a fascinating thing but the reality is you have ruined the reputation of being true KMCian. If that was your intention you could have published the journal without using the KMC student magazine in the background. If this magazine would have been a batch magazine I wouldn’t have said these things.

Editorial team and the batch as a whole must take the responsibility of the disaster. Shame on you guys. You are right CM dai this guys are arrogant, I feel like KMC has not the spirit of care as we used to have.

I have both the good news and the bad news.
Let me start off with the bad news first. Personally i'm taking it as a
disheartening news that "Sanjiwani" has lost its name. Feels like someone dear to me has passed away and become a history now. Hopefully not!
And the good news is that it also feels like there's a reincarnation.
But don't you think even in reincarnation the originality persists.

Wait a second!!
Wait a second!!!

But, what are all these changes for guys?
You all seem to be talking like the US presidential candidates. Bring a change.......phew!!!!!!!!

I still don't believe this is happening. You guys must be kidding.
Good luck whatsoever.

Dear NOHA, continuation of SANJIWANI is a dream of many others too. It was my unachieved dream and now I give my full support to the IXth batch who have taken this bold step for the good.

Re: New KMC Magazine - Lost Tradition in the Torn Out Pages - 26-01-2008, 04:58 AM

Regarding the heated discussions going on here, I have few views:

First of all, KMC has not published any sort of magazines for the last 3 years, and this batch has finally managed to come up with their own. Keeping all the arguments aside, this can be taken as an accomplishment in itself from one perspective.

But it’s disheartening and sad that so many controversies and arguments have marred the charm and significance of the revival of college magazine, some even argue this magazine should not be given the status of college magazine. This is a mere batch magazine which has totally failed to embrace the full image of KMC and which has gone against the spirit of KMC and the KMCian trend - originally set up by sanjiwani.

What I personally feel is "Change is the rule of the nature and it is inevitable and important as well. Change is what reflects our individuality". But then it is also very true that there should be a limit. So, when every batch come up with the college magazine, it’s very likely that there will be some changes - some additions and some subtractions - to the previous ones and we should happily appreciate and accept that as well. In fact this is what makes the magazine more attractive, more readable and better. But one very crucial thing is that- however modified the magazine is – after all it should remain what it is? We should never forget Modifications and total change are different things. Even nature does not allow drastic mutations while gradual evolutionary changes are much appreciated. That’s the main point.

There are some vital issues which should remain fundamental and which should never be changed like the name and the trend of including the outgoing batch profile!!!! These issues are the soul of the college magazine and they carry the sentiments of the previous batches who have worked so hard to maintain the legacy of college magazine. And it becomes our duty to respect our seniors and the trend they have set up because it’s what maintains the integrity of our whole system.

So, what ever arguments are going on, they are all regarding the maintenance of the legacy of college magazine. College magazine should not be confined to that particular batch, it should incorporate whole college, and only then it can get the sacred status of "The college magazine". I guess all of us should remember this.

And regarding the view that the juniors have planned to come up with the original sanjiwani, I must say that’s a nice idea. What I feel is - the publication of college magazine is not the responsibility of a single batch but the whole college. It’s true that one batch is more involved in the process but that does not mean that we seniors just stand as mere spectators, it’s our duty to guide and help our juniors and it’s their duty to consult seniors. So, I suggest, with next issue, the editorial team should have representatives from all the batches so that the view and spirit of whole college would be represented in the magazine and not only of a single batch.

At last, what ever is said and done;
Let’s take a deep breath and say;
Long live our KMC
Long live our student unity
Long live our college magazine!!!
