It is not difficult to know what to do to lose weight, it is the how. It is just so simple to eat in the style that caused the weight gain in the first place and continue in our comfortable lives. What is required is a change, and change can be difficult. Part of any successful change is external motivation, or commonly known as support.
Dieting is tough enough. Going at it alone is almost impossible. To increase your odds of success, you may need support. This is the extra push that many of us need to continue on to where we can see results. This support is not always being nice or giving us what we want, it is what we need at the time we need it and can take many forms.
The first type of support is the shoulder to cry on but should not be confused as being a push over. That is enabling, and this type of support often is the reason that we experienced weight gain in the first place, when live was tough, we drowned our sorrows in food and someone close helped us do it. A true shoulder to cry on is being there when we are emotionally weak and need someone, but not giving us food. That is just giving in to our weaknesses and continuing the vicious cycle. This type of enabler simply wants to avoid conflict and only gives in to avoid the challenge that true support brings. True change means that we need support beyond what the enabler can provide. Eventually, the change becomes frightful and the enabler even begins to tempt us. We often call these people 揇iet Ninjas? they sneak up on us and kill our diet efforts.
Support can mean tough love and accountability. When we were interviewing members of The Diet Smart Plan in establishing our membership service, we found out that the best support is us being accountable to our members as a support team and them being accountable to us. This type of dual support is critical to success. You begin to feel that you are part of something more than just yourself and you see your weight loss efforts beyond a simple vanity goal. You begin to see that you will let someone else down and will less likely to overeat of fall off the plan.
We also took this a step further, we found out that if members had to check in on a regular basis, they would be less likely to fall off the program. The more you have to think about the immediate consequences of having to account for your eating habits with our support team, the more you are conscious of your behaviors. This weekly check in then becomes engrained after a series of weeks and the healthy behavior continues.
Having a support team is critical, having the right support team who will hold you accountable to success is just as important.
