President's Cancer Panel Urges Tobacco Regulation by FDA The President and Congress should authorize the FDA "to strictly regulate tobacco products and product marketing," says the annual report of the President's Cancer Panel.
Among the panel's other recommendations: - Farm subsidies should encourage production of fruits and vegetables and limit production of high-fructose corn syrup.
- Physical education in grades K–12 should be reinstated "at meaningful levels."
- Congress and the President should institute "comprehensive bans on tobacco advertising, promotion, and sponsorship."
The report calls the tobacco industry "a vector of disease and death that can no more be ignored in seeking solutions to the tobacco problem than mosquitoes can be ignored in seeking to eradicate malaria."
