FDA Warns Against Giving Cough Medicine to Children Under 2

The FDA is warning parents against using cough and cold products in children under age 2; the safety of these products will be reviewed during an October advisory committee meeting.

The FDA says that serious complications seen with these drugs appear to be due to overdosage.

According to a CDC survey earlier this year, over 1500 children under age 2 were treated during 2004–2005 for adverse effects connected to these drugs, such as hypertension, arrhythmias, and stroke. Three infant deaths were linked to cold and cough medicines during that time — the infants appeared to have high blood levels of pseudoephedrine.

When medicines are warranted in older children, the FDA reminds parents to follow the instructions on the drug label and to seek a clinician's advice if they have questions. If a child's condition worsens, the agency says, the medication should be stopped immediately and the child should be taken to a healthcare provider.
