Medical Abortion Not Associated with Adverse Effects on Next Pregnancy Women who have undergone a drug-induced abortion do not suffer any more adverse effects during their next pregnancy than those who have undergone surgical abortion, the New England Journal of Medicine reports.
Researchers used Danish health registries to track the method of abortion and the outcome of the subsequent pregnancy in a cohort of nearly 12,000 women. They found that ectopic pregnancies, spontaneous abortions, preterm birth, and low birth weight were no more frequent among women who had undergone medical abortions than surgical abortions.
They conclude that "medical abortion is at least as safe as surgical abortion" with respect to risk for adverse outcome in the next pregnancy.
