Older Teens May Lose Protection Against Hepatitis B

A study raises the possibility that children who received hepatitis B vaccine as infants may be losing immunity as they reach adolescence.

The study, in Pediatrics, involved administering booster doses to 212 adolescents age 10 to 14 and 166 children age 5 to 7. All were born to hepatitis B surface antigen-negative mothers and received the first dose of vaccine within a week of their births.

The study found that 97% of 5-year-olds had an anamnestic response to the booster dose, compared with 60% of 14-year-olds.

The authors said the diminished response among the older adolescents "might indicate waning immunity." They theorized that a booster dose by early adolescence could offer longer-term protection, although that needs to be tested.
