FDA Approves First in New Class of HIV Drugs The FDA granted accelerated approval to the anti-HIV drug maraviroc (Selzentry) on August 6, making it the first commercially available agent in the class of CCR5 inhibitors. While other antiretroviral drugs fight HIV within white blood cells, maraviroc prevents the virus from entering uninfected cells by blocking the CCR5 coreceptor. The drug is indicated for treatment-experienced patients who have detectable HIV viral load, evidence of resistance to multiple existing drugs, and documented infection with CCR5-tropic virus. Roughly half of all extensively treatment-experienced HIV-infected patients have CCR5-tropic virus. Journal Watch HIV/AIDS Editor-in-Chief Paul E. Sax comments: "When given to patients who harbor CCR5-tropic, multidrug-resistant virus, maraviroc greatly augments treatment responses. In addition, it appears to have a very favorable safety profile."
