Dangerous bacteria always live in our bodies. In fact, 700 different kinds of bacteria live in out mouths. Give them half a chance and they'll cause a multitude of problems, including cavities. Now, scientists report success with a new way to selectively target the nastier bacteria.
A team of researchers, supported by the National Institutes of Health, is testing an experimental treatment called STAMP, which stands for "specifically targeted antimicrobial peptides." It consists of small molecules with built-in chemical homing beacons attracted to the unique signature of the bacteria Steptococcus mutans, which is linked to cavities. STAMPs kill only S. mutans bacteria, leaving other good bacteria free to inhabit the mouth.
Researchers report preliminary studies show the STAMPs work effectively. They are now working on testing it in humans as part of a paste or mouthrinse.
