A trophy isn't the only thing Oscar winners get to enjoy. New research shows on average actors and actresses live almost four years longer than nominees who don't win.
The study from Toronto's Sunnybrook and Women's College Health Sciences Centre finds the winning benefits don't apply to actors alone. It shows directors who win an Oscar also live longer than non-winners, and male directors live 4.5 years longer on average than actors.
Researchers say the results add to previous findings that show a link between social status and health and longevity. They theorize winning an Oscar makes it easier to get work, be better appreciated, and get paid more.
Not all winners live longer. The study shows screenwriters who won an Oscar died 3.6 years earlier on average than nominees. Researchers say it may be because they don't get celebrity status and the opportunities and privileges that come with it. Because screenwriters aren't in the public eye, they may not worry about staying healthy and looking good like actors do.
The study also looked at the longevity of medical school class presidents in 2004. It shows they died an average of 2.4 years earlier than their classmates. Researchers say class presidents usually take on more responsibilities, which creates more stress that can cause them to neglect their own health Angel xenoMED | NDR “Nothing brings me more happiness than helping people in the society.
