PARSA, Sept 30 - More than a dozen people were injured in Birgunj in a clash between the local residents and security guards of the National Medical College on Saturday night over a petty issue.Among the injured, Raj Dev Sah Sonar alias Bhannu is in critical condition. Sonar has been rushed to Kathmandu for treatment on Sunday afternoon, after the sub regional hospital in the sub-metropolis referred him to the capital.
Protesting the incident, the locals have been burning tyres and chanting slogans at the main entrance of the hospital.
The locals have been preventing the hospital staff, patients and visitors from entering the hospital premises.
It all started after a local resident Pradeep bought a mobile phone for Rs 3500 from a security guard Bichari Yadav, three weeks ago.
However, Pradeep had not been able to pay back Rs 2300 to Yadav.
"Bichari did not agree when I said, the quality of the mobile phone was not good, so I don't want to buy the mobile phone," Pradeep said. “I asked him to return my money deducting some amount from it and take back the mobile set.”
But, Bichari had been forcing him to buy the mobile phone, he added.
At around 7 pm on Saturday, a group of guards including Bichari suddenly attacked Pradeep and two other locals Santosh and Shiva Kumar when they were passing by the Medical College.
The situation took a nasty turn after guards and some college staff attacked the locals with batons and stones when they went to protest the beatings.
The whereabouts of the employees of the college who were alleged to have been involved in the incident, including Bichari Yadav, Bhola Yadav, Debaki Sah, Tipan Yadav, Dayannanda Sah, Prayag Yadav is unknown following last night’s scuffle.
The locals have accused that the college management of safeguarding them.
The locals said that the college employees had been misbehaving with them in the past and this time around they crossed the limits.
However, the college principal Lok Nath Sharma and administrative officer Firoj Khan said that the incident has no connection with the college.
They added that they would not mind if the absconding employees were brought to the book, and would hand them over to the police if they come in contact with the college.
Police inspector at Ward Police Office Shreepur Gautam Mishra said that the police had been searching for the missing employees of the college.
However, the police have not succeeded in convincing the warring sides to resolve the conflict through talks.
