Thumbs up "SICKO" A Must Watch Movie - 22-09-2007, 08:43 AM

Hey guys... if u havent watched the Michael Moore movie "SICKO" then u are definitely missing something.

The same medical system (i.e of the US) we rave about is shown to have many flaws....full of political influences especially that of the health insurance companies. Let me give u few abstracts from the movie which may persuade u to watch it

A woman with brain tumor is rejected insurance , the reason- the condition does not seem to be life threatening

A man with cancer is rejected bone marrow transplantation because the procedure is experimental

A child is denied medical attention solely because she was taken to a hospital which was not affiliated to the insurance company her mother had registered to

A 22 year old woman with cervical cancer is rejected ...the reason - she is too young to have cervical CA !!!!!( yeah thats right , hard to believe isnt it?)

And the list goes on...

And YES all the patient mentioned above die later even though they had insurance...so u can guess wat happens to people who are not insured ( estimated to be around 50 million)

So guys please take a few minutes out of your busy schedules and watch this movie...ITS AN EYE OPENER!!!!

P.S. And the worst thing about this - Im preparing for the USMLE
and soon i can be a part of this MESS!!!!

Re: "sicko" A Must Watch Movie - 22-09-2007, 10:52 AM

Thanks docnick for this wonderful topic which I wanted to talk for long time. Yes, I too watched this movie and fetl pity for American Health Care System.

It was Fahrenheit 9/11 which was the first movie I ever watched by Michael Moore.

I literally went into a shock when I finished this movie.

Then, I heard about SICKO, so awaited eagerly long before its release.

I don't have to say much about this movie as docnik has already highlighted, if you want to go through some of its review then;

Sicko : Review : Rolling Stone
Sicko Review - Stop and Wonder Web Development
Sicko - Rotten Tomatoes
FlickFilosopher.com: Sicko (review)
Sicko review

You can get plenty of website with its review.

Then I became curious who is this guy making movies on such controversial topic and I found out that he is a millionaire.

Michael Francis Moore (born April 23, 1954) is an American author and Academy Award-winning director and producer of Fahrenheit 9/11 and Bowling for Columbine, two of the highest-grossing documentaries of all time.

Moore is a self-described liberal who has criticized globalization, large corporations, gun violence, the Iraq War, U.S. President George W. Bush and the American health care system in his written and cinematic works. In 2005 Time magazine named him one of the world's 100 most influential people. [read more]

Here is one interesting things about Moore: Moorelies

"...The biggest anti-Michael Moore website on the internet..." - Michael Moore

Whatever it may be for christ there is always an antichrist just like two pole of a magnet without + & - it is unstable. Finally Moore has given health care purposal

I watched that documentary last week. I guess it was shown in IOM a week back by the NMS, I believe. What did people think of it. The documentary is incredibly biased, they've shown all the back aspects of medicine in the US. I'm glad I reside in the UK, the health service here isnt perfect, and not all treatment is available due to costs, but access to healthcare is considered a right, it's not just for the rich and the affording which is the case for the US and Nepal. The healthcare system is far reaching in the UK. However, there are missionary hospitals and other facilities for the non-affording patients in the states, so all isn't that glum. For those medics in Nepal going to the states, to be honest, is it really going to be that bad, it's virtually the same practice in terms of morals and ethics, but a much better lifestyle.

"sicko" being screened at kmcth - opportunity u can't afford to miss - 26-09-2007, 01:44 AM

For those who are studying and/or working/teaching at KMCTH and have not watched 'Sicko', I have great news! It is going to be screened here in KMCTH this Sunday (30th Sept. 2007) and for a good cause.

Actually it is a fund raising programme for one of our friends from St. xavier's campus, Carmalita srivastava who is diagnosed with ALL. she can not have bone marrow transplant because of associated heart problems and complications. So all of us from sxc scattered in different colleges here in nepal and abroad have been organising a series of fund raising programmes to help her financially.

instead of asking for fund directly, we decided to screen some movies so that you can have some decent entertainment and help our friend at the same time. the entry fee is rs. 50 only per person and the tickets are served on first come first serve basis. you can check the notice board in kmcth for sneak previews and timings. likewise, for tickets please contact students from st. xavier's in your respective semesters. their names are also displayed in the notice board.

the movies that are going to be screened are:
sicko - documentary
greater nepal - documentary
bheda ko oon jasto - documentary
1408 - thriller/horror
tae guk ki - korean
the pursuit of happyness - drama/biopic

these movies will be screened from 30 sept to 5 oct in kmcth. check the notice board for further info.

Healthcare system here in US is not as shown in sicko.I admire Michael Moore for his work in other documentaries but this is heights !! From my experience here i can at least say this much that, quality of care here is among the best,if not the best.Only issue ppl shout about is,Universal Healthcare which is not there in US.If you know the system here then you will say like I do,it's just the matter of who provides the healthcare, the gov. or private organisations. And here its the Private or community hospitals.

UNIVERSAL HEALTHCARE is not always the best option. It increases tax mammothly and doesnt give choices for the people. The system here is,if you can pay,pay for the insurance and go where you like.If you cant then you can get free service from the community hospitals. It is true that if you dont have insurance and you are on a medicaid programme then you cannot go to the doc that you want and have to go to the doc that the programme certifies but hey....thats OK !! This system can be made better though,if what Hillary Clinton is saying right now is followed. That would be making sure everyone has insurance coverage one way or the other.Either from the employer or self or from the government so that everyone has choices, that would ofcourse be great.

There are issues of problems with insurance companies but its not that you are denied of healthcare just because you dont have money or your insurance company denies payment. You get the service that you need and then you pay for it,not the other way round like we have in Nepal. If the insurance company doesnt pay for it then ppl can apply for medicaid and if deemed true the Federal Gov.pays for it.

Since i live in NY.I can say this much that the State Gov.spends 16 billion dollars a year on free healthcare to the poor and the needy and that is above the money that is being spent by the federal government.I havent seen anyone being denied of the service that they need just because they dont have money.

It should also be noted that the high quality of care provided is possible because its not a government run beurocratic mess.I personally believe that this is the way to do it.Let the hospitals, researchers run their show and limit government with the monitoring part.
