Hernia patient dies at KMC - 19-01-2006, 05:28 PM

I just watched in kantipur tv that a hernia patient died in KMC during operation. Relatives of the unfortunate patient were blaming doctors for their mistakes. They were demanding process de jure against the concerned doctors, otherwise they would not accept the dead body. The director, who was sat in cool manner said, he didnt know about the case but accepted that such patients die very rarely.

What did in the fact happen ?? Can somebody explain more about the case??

hi guys,
I also saw that in kantipur TV(ekantipur.com)too.Doctors make mistakes, they are only human beings, even anesthesia itself has 1 in a thousand mortality risk(please give a better figure if u know) but the issue is not that, the issue is how u handle it.This is where we are so backward, its not just about Dr.B.M.Shrestha and KMC its with every other hospital in Nepal.
Dr.shrestha, the director is a very nice human being and a good doctor but he did not handle the press well.Could have just said "I have been informed that there has been a mortality,an investigation is underway to find the cause, once we know the cause we will let everyone know and if it happened because of someone's negligence then i will make sure the guilty is punished".
If the director who actually is also the head of the department of ANESTHESIA (most likely culprit there,if at all it is due to negligence or incompetence) doesnt know what happened then who is supposed to know. His answer was something like "I DUNNO WHO PISSED IN MY PANTS".

Tyaita, I found it a bad Idea to tackle the press temporarily. Moreover such answers may burst antipathy in other ppl. Your suggested reply would be very much relieving in this case.

I saw the same in KTV....
Hope that KMC gives the reason soon..
What so ever be the reason after discharge from the operation room its always called that there must be doctors fault..
Can any one clear out the main story

uffff rajeeb don't be silly yar, it does happen I have seen cases of mortality during lipoma removal. look, you can't say this guys know nothing, we are just an infant in the field of medicine don't say hernia is just a simple surgery nothing is simple in medicine you don't know when it become wrost.

but we have to learn that even a simple case should be taken carefuly, anything could have happen in this case, may be intraoperative stroke, anaesthetic hazards, pre-existing morbid condition anything, anyway we will hear about it when the hospital will disclose the reason for this catastrophe. nobody in our field take things easily, they must have tried their level best but what can we say despite of their effort they might have not able to handle the situation.. its God who decide everything.

i express my deep sympathy to patient's family during this sad hour of their life.

u r right CSF..but u know the mortality rate for hernia is less than 1 %...and if it would have been serious case then patients family would not have blamed to the doctors ...i guess it was the mistake of doctors ...
I agree with u that any unexpected things can happen in medicine but still why the mortality occurs in our country and not in other country ...
I mean if its natural or due to some medical complications then its ok ..I have to nothing to say on it .....But if its due to negligence of the doctors then there must be dome something so that it will prevent future occurrence of such cases ....
