KATHMANDU, July 1 - A doctor in an inebriated state allegedly misbehaved and manhandled six patients and their caretakers in the District Hospital in Bardiya, Friday night.According to the caretakers, Dr. Ganesh Singh Bhandari stormed into the Female Ward of the hospital at around 8:30 p.m and started verbally abusing and manhandling the patients and caretakers present there.
Shortly after the incident, policemen arrived and took the doctor away to a nearby hotel, according to sub superintendent of police Shyam Bahadur Khadka. According to acting health chief of the hospital Shova Kanta Gautam, Bhandari - a doctor at Rajapur Primary Health Center-- was appointed in the district hospital to temporarily fill up a vacant post.
"The doctor was so drunk that he seemed senseless," said Krishnawati Godiya, a female patient admitted in the hospital. She also alleged that the doctor fondled female patients.
Ramesh, waiting on his ill wife in the hospital, said that Bhandari tried to hit him with his belt, while shouting at him. "He tried to hit me with his belt when I tried to stop him from yanking the saline-water bottle and syringe suspended to my wife's bed," Ramesh said. "I have even kept the belt with me after snatching it from the drunken doctor," he said showing the belt.
Sabitri Lodh, a tuberculosis patient, said that the foul-mouthed doctor threatened to "kick her out of the hospital". Another patient, Manisha Budha claimed that the doctor even hit a woman patient in her mouth, just when the latter was checking-in at the hospital. She returned to Nepalgunj after the incident.
Bhakta Bahadur Thapa, the hospital peon acknowledged witnessing the doctor's unruly behavior on the patients. "The doctor tried to hit Ramesh with his belt," Thapa said, adding, "However, Ramesh snatched the belt from the doctor and slapped him in return."
When asked for his comments, Dr. Bhandari denied any such incident took place. "Neither did I do any such thing, nor did anyone beat me. Someone is trying to tarnish my image," Bhandari said. Meanwhile, police have arrested Dr Bhandari for interrogation. Also, District Administration Office (DAO) formed a probe committee to investigate the incident after the victims filed a complaint seeking actions against Bhandari in the DAO.
