In the Foothills of Medicine - 28-12-2005, 09:12 AM

Dear Friends,

When a bunch of Nepalese doctor who have already been invested so much by the Gov. for serving the poor people in the country, are flying away from their responsibilities, here is doctor from the other pole of the world whose country is considered as dreamland for many is trying to replace them.

Dr. McKersie, Robert C a family physician from Chicago, USA is a great friend and well wisher of Nepal has served in the remote hilly areas of Nepal through Himalayan Health Care.

At present scinario when most of the Nepalese doctors are piling up in the urban areas and there is a great hesitation to go to the rural areas, Dr. McKersie has become an inspiration for all and has shared his experience and vision through his own creation "In the Foothills of Medicine - a young doctors journey from the inner city of Chicago to the mountains of Nepal.

In the Foothills of Medicine By McKersie, Robert C

In the Foothills of Medicine shares one doctor's intriguing true story from the front lines of medicine. Dr. Robert McKersie writes vividly and passionately about the patients whom he saw, touched, and thought about during his intense inner city internship in family medicine and medical treks to remote villages in Nepal.

The book shelves are lined with memoirs, personal accounts, and narratives by young doctors, residents, and graduating medical students. In the Foothills of Medicine, written candidly in clear and simple prose that goes beyond the usual account of the experiences of becoming a physician, ranks far above the best. The power of the idealism explodes from the pages without once mentioning it. The sense of social responsibility and humanitarianism, the value conflicts, and the awareness of medicine's imperfections are stated forthrightly. Most importantly, it is not only the story of a young doctor engrossed in his vocation, but a young man finding himself as a person.

-Edward J. Eckenfels, Emeritus Professor, Rush University Medical Center

McKersie has produced a marvelous memoir, fusing his journey to become a physician and his encounter with humanity in inner city Chicago and, yes, Nepal! Along the way, he rejects society s failure to provide vital health services, offering an alternative vision of solidarity and caring. The result: a thrilling and imaginative narrative, giving voice to an emerging physician leader.

-Dr. Quentin Young, Co-founder of Physicians for a National Health Program, Former President of the American Public Health Association

I must appreciate the hard work to bring out this book by dr mckarsie, but the cost for us is too high it was ~ $15 for paper back and ~ $6 for online .pdf version.

obviously very very little no of nepali have got credit card and that too who are residing in the US or UK.

and paper back edition is it is Nepali Rs. ~1200 which is too costly for us. so I would ask dr. tirtha to ask the author to donate this book in some of the libraries of Nepal where we could borrow and read.

if not nepali libraries he can do it to american center.

Message from Author of In the Foothills of Medicine - 28-12-2005, 09:48 AM

Dear Friends in Nepal,

I am honored and humbled by Dr. Kharel's nice words about my book. I will figure out a way to get this book into Nepal so that people have a chance to read it. I do not want cost to be a barrier to anyone reading this book, let me work on a way to help with this.

I have loved your country and people from the moment I stepped foot there in 2001. And I will continue to work there as much as I am able.

Warm regards,

Dr. Robert McKersie
Author of "In the Foothills of Medicine, A Young Doctor's Journey from the Inner City of Chicago to the Mountains of Nepal."

I would like to congratulate Dr. Robert C McKersie for his untiring effort to bring out and to let In the Foothills of Medicine - a young doctors journey from the inner city of Chicago to the mountains of Nepal, to take its first breath on October, 2005.

Some of you might be interested why do people write a book? Well to communicate! To help other people. To save them the hassles the author went through. To share some advice. To inspire others and to enroll others into author's ideas or to make your community a better place.

Writing a book is not an easy job, bringing out your thoughts into words is a difficult task, however Dr. Robert McKersie has done this for his love for Nepal.

I am also very much excited to read this book, hopefully I will go through it within few days and I will give my review.

Well as some of the users have raised the voice for the price and all, I think in some extent it’s true for us. Paper back edition is usually costlier than eBOOK version. Definitely we would go for eBOOK and then credit card barriers comes.

As I went through the links and found out, it has eBOOK version therefore I would request the author that can it be possible to have an online access for xenoMED users? As almost all the xenoMED user are related to medical professional (medical student, doctors, physician).

As author Dr. McKarsie is showing his interest to help us in this matter

I would suggest Dr. McKarsie to provide
  • Free access to our xenoMED user
  • A copy of this book to all the Medical Colleges in Nepal (if possible leading hospitals too)
  • Central Library, TU
  • Keshar Mahal (Library, Ministry for Education)
  • American Center (Library run by Embassy of America)
If Dr. McKarsie is willing to donate his book on the above institutions xenoMED is willing to volunteer for its distribution in the above Libraries for free of cost. I think this would be the most effective way to reach many medical professionals and let them know the work, love & affection of Dr. McKarsie for Nepal.

Regarding free access to our xenoMED user that can be done through two ways
  • Provide a username and password to get the access or
  • Provide an eBOOK (.pdf) so that we will make it online through xenoMED
But for this publisher has to give permission.

Great to know bout Dr. McKersie. I just figured out that besides working at CFHC, he has been doing lot of other thing, esp. for poor countries and children. The cheerful portrait below must be of Dr. McKersie, the schweitzer fellow.
Dr. McKersie, I really appreciate your Engagement and cordially thank you for your Interest on Nepal.
