Killer in Nepal is 'hunting women tourists' - 11-12-2005, 11:37 AM

POLICE in Nepal believe a serial killer is preying on female tourists.
The Department of Foreign Affairs in Canberra and the British Foreign Office have warned visitors "to use the utmost caution" in the area where two women, one French and the other German, disappeared.

French diplomats first raised the alarm, discovering blood, clothing and other items belonging to the two in Nagarjun Forest, a wildlife reserve near the Nepali capital, Kathmandu.

The first to disappear was Celine Henry, 31, from France, who signed the visitors' register at Nagarjun on September 3. She didn't sign out.
Her family reported her missing to the French embassy a month later.
The French later discovered Ms Henry's name in the Nagarjun register and the next day French ambassador Michel Jolivet went to retrace her steps.
He discovered a water bottle, black jersey and a bra, and called the police. They found fresh blood stains and an area of flattened grass nearby.

What they had found was not Ms Henry's murder scene, though, but apparently that of Sabine Gruneklee, 32, from Germany. She had signed into Nagarjun the previous day, but hadn't signed out.
A further search found Ms Henry's keys and pages from her passport, and Ms Gruneklee's driver's licence.

"It seems that there is a serial killer," said police Superintendent Pitambar Adhikari. "We've found things there from both ladies and it seems the culprit is the same."

The case has echoes of a string of murders of backpackers in Asia in the 1970s by the notorious Charles Sobhraj.
Among Sobhraj's 20 suspected victims, two died in Kathmandu. He was finally tracked down by a Dutch diplomat.
No bodies have been found in the latest case, and there is no evidence that like Sobhraj, the killer is a foreigner.

German forensics experts and sniffer dogs have arrived in Kathmandu to help the investigation, after what has been widely criticised as an inadequate response by local officials.

hi - 11-12-2005, 10:05 PM

its a shameful thing that such an incident is going on in nepal -once renowned as one of the safest tourist destination. i just fear what impact will it have in the touirist industry which has already been shattered by the ongoing political turmoil and the maoist rebellion.

its really sad to hear such thing going on in Nepal... and on top of it,its also shameful coz' our own police and security department is unable to do anything regarding that and has to take help from foreigners to solve a crime going on in our place. .
lets hope that the killer gets caught soon and no other such incident happens in our country...
let the peace return again..

Tourism is declining in Nepal every day by day bcoz of such incidents. Just few days before a japanesetourist was beaten up by policemen in Pokhara, other incident yesterday where tourist who were appealing for peace were interupted and arrested by policemen.
What impact will all this createin Tourism sector? We all can guess that.
