Once when i was on a trekking trail in Nepal and I met an NRI doctor and she asked me if a child becomes ill in the middle of the night in these villages where do they take him/her? I said why middle of the night,even in the mid day if a child is sick they take him to the local faith healer.She asked are they trained,do they manage well and stuffs...and you can imagine what my answers were.This is the state of our healthcare delivery system.
We dont have to ponder upon why its like this.Its like this because of the empathy shown to the lives of ordinary citizens by the state and it is like this because we failed in teaching our Kids about the REAL HEROS OF NEPAL and how they built this Nation.How many of us know about who worked hard to establish bir/prasuti/kanti hospitals.Do you know Dr.Dixit was the only guy from his batch in AIIMS to not to go to UK and came back home to serve the country,have we heard of Dr.Shah who convinced King Birendra that indeed a medical collage is a possiblity in Nepal and went on to Open TUTH and run it so well for years.Do we know about Dr.Kanti Giri/Dr.Divyasori Malla/Dr.saraswori padhye and how they established Prasuti griha? I am ashamed to aknowledge the fact that i had never heard of Dr.Sabitri Gurung in my lifetime.Never even read it in any quiz books and there isnt any topic "history of the build up of health systems in nepal" we need to learn it and admire our Heros,we need to teach our children to follow their footsteps.Its the right time for this,as a sweeping change goes through our country.Its not just enough to learn in our medical schools,who was the first doctor in the world to do certain procedures,we should be taught,who did it the first time in Nepal.Because this is what matters most to us.As you come out of Nepal then you realise how nice Nepalese ppl are and how Pathetically backward our Government is.You cannot blame a doctor or one medical fraternity here,its the system that works.There are hundreds of doctors trying to go and work in any part of Nepal right now and there are empty positions and of course lots of patients waiting but there is something seriously wrong with our system to connect the dots and make it work.
This is an oppertune time,i hope like a political change in our country,there is a change in the mindset too.

I also heard this name for the first time seriously... I am too ashamed of myself for my GK. I guess first Nepali Male Docor is Mahendra Nepal but didn't know the first Nepali Female Doctor.

By going through this post Obituary: First Nepali Female Doctor passed away at 82 and I want to read her book मेरो सम्झना our seniours have done so much for our country hope one day we will be able to follow their footsteps.

Really , after reading the thread, i became conscious of the importance of knowing about our heroes, ...............why don't we do it when they are alive?!!
