Unhappy please help - 13-03-2007, 08:49 AM

hi can anyone recommend a good book for physiology that can easily be understood by a first year medical student(straight out of school) . I have been prescribed ganong's review of medical physiology or the textbook of medical physiology by Guyton, but I don't know which one is better.

Physiology By Chaudhary or Mahapatra - 13-03-2007, 09:20 AM

Ganong and Guytton has the history and best book for physiology if.... if you spent more time studying this book.

Ganong need very good English and pre-knowledge about physiology

Guytton is very good you read it understand but as you close the book you forget i.e. you read like novel but very little remains inside your brain. But it is the best book to make your concept clear.

So, in my opinion Textbook of Physiology by Mahapatra or Textbook of Physiology by Chaudhary either one is best for those who are in the first year. They are simple, easy to understand and you can count on them for your exam. And you can keep Ganong and Guytton as reference.

hey you can get more detail info from this link

Recommended Books for Basic Science

  • I'm a clear, colorless fluid, contain small quantities of glucose and protein.
  • I fill the ventricles of the brain and the central canal of the spinal cord.
  • You can get me through Lumbar Puncture.
  • If I have White blood Cells or bacteria - Meningitis result.

hi,
I think you should go for either ganong or guyton.Dont go for cheap indian crap.I think Anatomy from Chaurasia and Physiology from Bijlani are behind our weak basic science knowledge.Study good authentic books and dont just try to pass by reading "Exam Friendly" indian books which will encourage you to MUG and not understand.

greg, if you are aiming high go for Ganong/Guytton or else chose any book by CSF.

or you can read indian books which give yous over view and then go for Ganong/Guytton to make your concept even more clear and dive deep into the physiology.

or best would be check in your library go individual books for a week and decide the best for you.

But there is no replacement for Ganong and Guytton.

Textbook of medical physiology by Guyton>>>>> i think this is a standard book...prescribed my many proffessors & medical colleges.

its simple >>>i mean the language . just spend more time to catch the sequence.rest you'll love it.

thanks friends
your replies have really made me think....about whether I just want to pass the exam or actually gain an understanding of physiology. I've decided to go for ganong/guyton and borrow individual books from the library for easier reading material.
thanks again

greg, thats a nice decision you have made.. but please do not think that other books by indian writers are of low standard and bad.... its true that they donot have a glorious history as that of gyton and ganong.. but they are really easy and suit our course..... but the writers are very renowned ones and they have worked so hard in bringing up there book ... so i suggest ki first you know what is your syllabus... what are the things you are supposed to learn and then decide which book covers all these areas....then ask can you reproduce the things you study in your book in exams... there is no doubt that indian books are easier to reproduce at exam times than gyton..... and remember unless you score high in exams no one is going to know how much you know...

good point suvash, and I don't want to take anything away from indian authors as well
so I think I'll get an indian book for exams... but there is no doubt that I want to get the understanding required for top marks...hence the ganong guyton combo
but thanks anyway
