von Jo Johnson (Kathmandu) - Source
Scientists want an early-warning system as the threat of flash floods from glacial lakes in the Himalayas increases. Glacial lakes are forming across the region and flash floods do not respect national boundaries.
Scientists in Nepal call them the "tsunamis from the sky". Nearly 50 glacial lakes, high in the Himalayas, could soon burst their banks, according to leading mountain experts, sending millions of gallons of debris-filled floodwaters hurtling down valleys and putting tens of thousands of lives at risk. " Glacial lake outburst floods are like tsunamis in the sense that your warning is just a matter of minutes," says J. Gabriel Campbell, director-general of the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) in Kathmandu.
Dr Campbell's team has studied the impact of climate change on glaciers in the eight-country Hindu Kush-Himalayan region. Its findings make alarming reading. "Potential catastrophic flash floods that used to happen every 200 or 300 years will now happen every two to three years and with ever-increasing frequency from now on," says Arun Shrestha, a climate-change specialist at ICIMOD. "We urgently need to build up early-warning systems and take action to mitigate the risk."
Glacial lakes are formed when melt-water pools in the void left by the retreating tongue of ice. They are unstable, held in only by the rocks and debris of the terminal moraine wall. Most glacial lake collapses occur when large chunks of ice from the glacier break off, displacing water, or when earthquakes rupture the moraine wall.
The last detailed survey of glacial lakes in Nepal and Bhutan, which was published in 2001 and relied on aerial photographs and satellite images, found that 20 of the 2,323 such lakes in Nepal and 24 of the 2,674 in Bhutan were potentially dangerous. Hundreds of glaciers tracked by ICIMOD are just melting away. One known as ED010, at Kongma Tikpe in Nepal retreated 60cm a year between 1976-78 and by an average of 10 metres a year between 1989 and 2004.
Glacial lakes are forming across the region and flash floods do not respect national boundaries. Countries such as Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and India are exposed in particular. There have been 25 glacial lake floods recorded in Nepal, for example, of which more than half originated in Tibet.ICIMOD believes that warning systems are urgently needed. But most lakes are inaccessible by road and over the past five years just one of 44 lakes identified in 2001 as dangerous has been equipped with sensors capable of sounding sirens downstream. "It is a question of money," says Dr Shrestha, noting that the early-warning system and drainage channel at the Tsho Rolpa lake cost the World Bank and Dutch government $3.5m. "Donors don't see a tangible benefit in risk-mitigation work on the glaciers. They prefer to spend $2.5m on a road," says Dr Shrestha.
An existing early-warning mechanism between India and China prevented what could have been a catastrophe on the River Sutlej in February last year. By the time flood waters surged through the border state of Himachal Pradesh, although bridges were destroyed, most people had been evacuated and no lives were lost. This article has really made us think about the harmful effect of Global Warming.
At the national level, some steps should be taken to stop Global Warming and all the nations should think this issue as a serious matter and should make some plans to cope with such situation.
I am definitely going to join Stop Global Warming Virtual March and everyone should try their best to save the Planet.
This is our planet and so it is our responsibility to save it. | | Co-Admin | | Posts: 876 Thanks: 0

Thank you very much for citing my concern, Dr Angel. Well it is really a serious matter. The increasing sea water level is already a threat for cities like Venice, Amsterdam and Hamburg which lie at -5 to 10 m and above from sea level ( The reason behind some people calling Holland as Naglok). In europe they know the danger and have developed different alarming and rescuing systems. But in case of countries like Nepal, where beside economical the geographical factor comes as a great barrier when it is time to rescue, it is very frightening imagination. We have recently learned similar incident from last earthquake in mountainous region of pakistan.
Weather has not gone crazy, we made it crazy
In Colorado people are having massive snow storm. In Germany we had few very windy ( ca 120kmh) days. Otherwise sunny 10-15°, which is actually impossible in January. Bad Weather on the Continent: Nine Die as Storms Blast Europe - International - SPIEGEL ONLINE - News

Bush (the USA being biggest polluter) finally seems to want to do something against climate change and eventually Kyoto treaty. It is mainly in hand of industrialized nations to save the world, because they are the biggest polluter.
