Tender love and care - 19-04-2008, 10:56 AM

So long there is life there is hope is an age old adage that we have been living with since ancient times.

In the face of adversity without means to fight back hope has been the only weapon for many of us in the society.

As a doctor a scenario keeps repeating in my mind is that of an elderly patient who may have suffered severe stroke or suffering from terminal cancer and is coming to his or her end.

Is it right in the name of hope to pursue with aggressive treatment costing huge sums which most families can not afford.

Ultimately what would only prolong misery but not quality of life In this battle of life and death where the winners are likely to be Doctors and Nursing homes rather than patients and their loved ones.

There is a time when families should be able to spend last moments with their loved ones without the barriers of ventilators, tubes and ICU gowns.
Is there a time when Doctors should pause and stop playing God and help families give their ill, loved ones a dignified pain free send off.
When is the time for tender love and care??
