Flag of Nepal - 11-03-2008, 06:42 PM

Dear Friends,
I was browsing a german informative website Allgemeinbildung, Lexikon, Wörterbücher & Reiseführer - wissen.de (wissen =to know) this morning. They have a flag quiz there, with information about origin/meaning of flag color/object etc. I was doing pretty well with the quiz, score 9 out of 10.
But I was astonished when I read about Nepal's flag. It reads, as written in german in following picture:

"The moon stands for the king, the sun for the prime minister and the triangles for the himalayas."

I found same meaning in various sites.

Google search found some sites with crazy infos like:

"The moon is supposed to represent quiet because Nepal is such a peaceful country and people are asleep during the night. And the sun is supposed to represent work because it is such a hard-working country and everyone is busy during the daytime."

I think it is very obvious to sleep at night and work during daytime, and so does not sound strong enough to be proud of it.

Read here:
Nepal

In our School, we were taught like it is in wiki, but only the bold statement:

"The blue border denotes peace and harmony that has been prevalent in the country since the age of Gautama Buddha, who was born in Nepal. The crimson color is Nepal's national color, and it indicates the brave spirit of the Nepalese people. The two triangles symbolize the Himalaya Mountains and represent the two major religions, Hinduism and Buddhism.[1] The red triangular flag has been a Hindu symbol of victory since the time of Ramayana and Mahabharata. The depiction of celestial bodies represents permanence, the hope that Nepal will last as long as the sun and the moon. The moon symbolises that the Nepalese are soothing and calm, while the sun symbolises fierce resolve.
The moon also symbolizes the shades and the cool weather of the Himlayas, whereas the sun symbolizes the heat and the high temperature at the lower part (Tarai) of Nepal."

What did you know about the flag ? And there has been discussion going on about changng the flag to rectangle with different motive. What is your opinion ?

i did learn what your learnt in school so let's stay with our own known principle & yes Wikipedia, a modern day encyclopaedia being one of the most reliable source (which comes in many languages but unfortunately can't browse in Mainland China) i hope people who'd like to go for the exact meaning for the flag will browse Wikipedia.
and for that particular Deutsch website, can you write them to correct it and make it similar to Wikipedia? they need to change & even know that we are no more Kingdom of Nepal & we don't have monarchy.

Oh yes,

The implication of our National Flag is fantastic. I had no such formal class/lecture or lesson on it but I remember my "Mahendramala" Teacher (at class 7) saying of the meanings of the symbols and colour of our National Flag which I found similar as Rajeev has mentioned here. It is terrific. I wonder whether the meaning was premeditated and designed flag or Flag was designed then the meanings were extrapolated as need per our country.

Anyway, that's nice.

Best wishes,
mati

Prior to writing this thread here, I wrote them about what I know. They wrote me that they had various sources. And since there is no official publication from the government part, they took books from different universities or people as source. However they would try to confirm it again.

But it is de facto our history. So, obviously people will talk about that.

In my opinion, the government should come up with an official statement about meaning of our flag. Thereby wiping off the rumor.

that's great that you've written them. actually people should be getting correct information, so in my opinion such change is necessary.

and i don't think our government is that active at the moment. they seem to be busy in elections and changing unnecessary things. let's hope anyway.
by the way, off the topic- even though Royal is supposed to be removed from Royal Nepal________ (anything) it still exists. Googled embassy of Nepal and THIS IS WHAT I GET so i think government is still busy, careless or whatever you think.
