KATHMANDU, Nov 30 - The National Anthem Selection Task Team (NASTT) has finally selected poet Byakul Maila's song as the new National Anthem of Nepal. NASTT Coordinator and culture expert Satyamohan Joshi said that the new National Anthem was selected from a total of 1272 different songs submitted to the team from across the country.
"We have completed the job assigned to us by the ministry," said Joshi. He also said that the new National Anthem was selected without knowing the name of its writer. "As per the guidelines given to the selection team, code numbers were given to all the songs we received and we selected one among them. We came to know the name of the composer only after the anthem was selected," he said.
NASTT had held a number of interaction programmes across the country to seek suggestions about the new National Anthem.
The first two lines of the new National Anthem read as follows:
'Sayaun Thunga Phoolka Hami Eutai Mala Nepali
Sarvabhaum Bhai Phailiyeka Mechi Mahakali...'
(From hundreds of flowers, we are one garland Nepali
Sovereign we are spread across Mechi Mahakali)- Unofficial Translation
The new National Anthem is two stanzas long and each stanza has four lines. There are altogether 47 words in the new National Anthem.
Talking to ekantipur after the selection of the anthem, Minister for Tourism, Culture and Civil Aviation, Pradeep Gyawali said, "The way the song of an indigenous and remote area's writer has been selected has added further charm to it."
Gyawali further said that the anthem selected by the NASTT would be submitted to the Council of Ministers, which would then "finalise" it.
Poet Byakul Maila whose real name is Pradeep Kumar Rai was born in the Hilepani village of Okhaldhunga district 34 years ago. Rai who holds a Bachelor's degree in Law and a Master's in Public Administration has been serving the Nepali literature for the last one and a half decades. He has written dozens of songs, poems, Haikus and is also the editor of Nepali Geet Sangraha (a collection of Nepali songs) and literary magazines like Barbhanjyang. He had actively participated in the April Movement.
"The song which has been selected (as the new National Anthem) as my song," an emotional Rai said, "is not my song. It's an expression of the feelings of the human sea that rose during Jana Andolan II."
The previous national anthem (Shreeman Gambhira Nepali Prachanda Pratapi Bhupati) music composed by Bakhatbir Budhapirthi and written by Chakrapani Chalise was adopted in 1899. The national anthem had widely been criticized as it was just a melody praising the monarchy.
The restored House of Representatives in its May 18 House Proclamation declared the existing national anthem null and void.

what about the music ?? Has it already been written ?
this text is great, short and still tells a lot.
Thanks to the revolution, we are, at least in this sense, better than many other countries, who still sing about their monarch or other about war.
But the word 'Aanchal' is bothering me little bit. I will need time to adjust. Aanchal sounds more hindi than nepali, isn't it so?

I find the line #7 very important : "बहु जाति, भाषा, धर्म, संस्कृति छन् विशाल", mainly because of the term "multi religion". It shows how flexible we Nepalese are. There are countries, which are going more nationalist and religious. For them it is a challenge or better said a "punch"; a country which is underdeveloped, seen as a part of so-called "uncivilized world" teaching them spectrum of Globalization, unity in humanity. It shows the democratic way of thinking of people and their believe in pluralism.
cheers

Its nice and meaningful. But was it so necessary to change the national anthem only b'coz it had mention of the king and queen? Our country though ruled by national parties will have king and queen and it has been accepted since so long and it represented our nation. I am not against the new national anthem but changing our national identity I dont think it is good. By changing the song its not that our country wont have king and queen as they will still be a part of our country. Sarensa

| Hello Sarensa,
question is why should we sing about the monarch ? Is there anything he has done in favor of our country or her people ? He cannot get the prize for what his grand grand pa did. If he is a king then he should be able to show that he really feels responsible for the country. He also had chance to show or do. He must forget his noble royal life and finally be a "responsible" not ruling head of state. I hate the distance they have maintained between them and people. What I do not understand is, what does he want to do with so much money: his personal, that of King Birendra and royal relatives, which he "seized" after massacre ? Had he made use of those property for benefit of society, people would have surely sung the old anthem for next 100 years.
This change in anthem is also a lesson for him and people like him. Nepal is not the first country to change its anthem. There had been such changes in many countries like Germany itself, Liechtenstein, The Netherlands, to name few. | | The Following User Says Thank You to Rajiv For This Useful Post: | | | Senior Member | | Posts: 315 Thanks: 5

i got thru ur post and it's good to see. All knows that as the time changes the situation and the conditions should be change. This is the true case in nepal. The time for the king and queen has gone.As before the people are illitrate and people work and the entertain is done only by the kings and now it the time for the people to rule the world. in most of the country the pattern of living and development has changed. All people should have right and the things should be also according to the people's effort. In my sense the new national anthem specifies the sacrifice of the people. national identity is not only bye the king and queen. It should be the whole people so, now this change has made the king and queen are also the poople. They should have right as the normal people have. and i wish the future will show this ... | | The Following User Says Thank You to sarosem For This Useful Post: | | | Senior Member | | Posts: 153 Thanks: 0
