Blast near SPA assembly venue, half dozen injured

KATHMANDU, Jan 14 - An unidentified person hurled an improvised explosive devise at a passenger bus just as the first joint electoral assembly of the seven-party alliance concluded at the busy Ratnapark area in downtown Kathmandu at around 3:30 pm Monday.Around six persons were injured in the socket bomb blast at Bhotahity, close to the venue of the SPA assembly at the Open Air Theatre, according to the Police Headquarters. No one is critically injured.
The bus belonging to Kantipur Yatayat, the police added.
The injured have been identified as Shiva Khadka, 40, Toran Gurung, 40, Dipesh Nepal, 15, Bharat Tamang, 36, Bir Bahadur Tamang, 35, and Rajesh Shrestha, 39, according to the Bir Hospital.
Four of the injured returned home after treatment and the remaining two will also be discharged soon, the hospital source informed.
No one has claimed the responsibility for the blast so far.

Nepal has become such a safe place.

In the middle of the day in the middle of the city when there are so many people around, one can hurl a bomb and disappear 'unidentified' in the crowd.

Bomb blast in central Kathmandu, eight hurt - 14-01-2008, 07:36 AM

At least eight persons were injured when a bomb went off near Bhotahiti, Kathmandu, minutes after a mass gathering of the seven parties to kick start their election campaigning concluded.

The bomb exploded underneath the overhead bridge at Bhotahiti at around 3:30 pm.

Eyewitnesses said they heard explosion in the middle of the road at the busy Ratnapark-Bhotahity intersection which lies few hundred meters from Khula Mach, the venue of the seven-party mass meeting.

They said a person hurled the socket bomb and slipped into the crowd.
Police officials said the eight persons injured in the incident have been admitted at Bir Hospital for treatment and all are out of danger.

The bomb also damaged a passenger van with a number plate Ba 1 Kha 7278 and a taxi (Ba 1 Cha 8819).

There is a tight presence of security personnel in the area following the incident.

No group has as yet taken responsibility for the bombing.
