Sir Edmund Hillary, 83, smiles in front of a giant picture of Mount Everest at the Birendra International Convention Centre in Kathmandu May 29, 2003 Sir Edmund Hillary, left, the lanky New Zealand mountaineer and explorer who with Tenzing Norgay, his Sherpa guide, won worldwide acclaim in 1953 by becoming the first to scale the 29,035-foot summit of Mount Everest, the world's tallest peak, died on Jan. 11, 2008. He was 88.
Sir Edmund wrote or was a co-author of 13 books, including “No Latitude for Error” (1961, Hodder & Stoughton), about the Antarctic experience. He also formed a foundation, the Sir Edmund Hillary Himalayan Trust, which raised millions and built schools, clinics, airfields and other facilities for the Sherpa villages in Nepal. For many years, Sir Edmund was president of New Zealand’s Peace Corps and an important voice in his country’s conservation efforts.

I am not just sad because he died but sad because no one in our media seems to know it. I remember the indifference of our media when Riyo taro hasimoto, the japanese prime minister who used to say Nepal is my second home, who built the new Kanti hospital building, who donated in numerous ways to Nepal and worried endlessly about us died.
| Agreed!!
I read the unfortunate news yesterday night here in german spiegel.de , the news was also there in BBC but not in Nepal's eKantipur (then I read "Hard facts about federalism" by Avantika Regmi).
These guys are running online national daily and never update news instantly. The news was posted to server( Posted on: 2008-01-10 22:51:02) relatively on time but was published to public punctually 12 hours too late. Now after the news has spread throughout the world they have also published. And what they have published: Quote: Edmund Hillary, first atop Everest, dies
Kantipur Report
KATHMANDU, Jan 11 - Sir Edmund Hillary, who made his historic climb to the top of the world's highest mountain, Mount Everest with Sherpa mountaineer Tenzing Norgay of Nepal, died Friday, reports the associated press. He was 88.Hillary died at Auckland Hospital about 9 a.m. Friday from a heart attack, said a statement from the Auckland District Health Board. | I can only say these journalists live behind the moon in darkness.
What I read 12 hours ago in Der Spiegel : Everest-Bezwinger: Sir Edmund Hillary ist tot - Panorama - SPIEGEL ONLINE - Nachrichten
With a beautiful picture Gallery: Edmund Hillary: Der Mann, der den Mount Everest bezwang - SPIEGEL ONLINE - Nachrichten

Dear Friends, I'm personally very sad and emotional to this moment to get the news of Sir Edmund Hilary's resting in peace. Primarily because I saw his works, sensed the respect Solu and Khumbu has, the love he does and the medical research I'm interested in has been initiated and inspired by him some half a century back in our Nepal Himalayas.
Be it Solu or Khumbu or we take all "Solukhumbu" there exists another god, enlightenment and respect - that is "Sir Edmund Hilary".
All the way up Everest - his works, his portrait, autobiography, books, adventures, numerous philanthropic and environmental works - in air, in lives, in lands, in vegetation - there is "HIM".
He had so much love, respect, commitment and will to work and visit this Nepal Himalaya that last year he couldn't come because he was hospitalized and was in oxygen but he couldn't resist himself - so he risked himself but couldn't live without seeing Nepal Himalaya- he, with oxygen cylinder and mask, helicomptered over Namche, Khumjung, Khunde, Thame all from aerial view and sherpas greeted from the ground with flowers, prayer flags, holy khatas....!!! They all were forced for this despite his yearly routine to return these villages on foot. Emotional, Tearful, long known relation(may be established in previous incarnation) with this place and people are earns for both Sherpas and Sir Edmund Hilary.
Hats off for him from our FORUM "XENOMED" - for the man who inspired, organized and led ever pioneering altitude research expedition known as "Silver Hut Expedition" in 1960 at Mimgbo glacier behind gem of Khumbu "Mt Ama Dablam". I'm myself very much saddened by his demise and things to be is - I was one of the important research members in the Silver Hut's grandson (another level of sophistication and height in the altitude and ICU research) "Caudwell Xtreme Everest Research Expedition" in 2007 spring on Everest. He pioneered research in altitude in which I'm interested now.
At the moment, we remember him and pray for his soul to rest in Peace. PS : - Quote: |
Here is my Picture in XENOMED as Avatar - from last fall when I spent a hectic, responsible and fruitful six weeks in Khumbu. The picture is just over the Cho La pass facing Gokyo (i.e. Gokyo is behind me) Side while climbing down to go Gokyo from Lobuje - it is 1 Nov 2007 AD. One of our veteran and very regular member of XENOMED Walrus was asking where the picture was from in another thread http://www.xenomed.com/forums/messag...tml#post133867. So with the theme related to Khumbu, Sir Edmund Hilary, my interest and picture - I though it is meaningful to give its introduction here.

We have lost a man who loved Nepal more than we do. I took the following portrait in one of the hotel in Lukla. He was not only the real hero of Khubu region but Nepal and the God Father too.
I have been to Kunde Hospital established by Sir Edmund Hillary in 1966 AD [ Read More]. I was impressed by Dr. Kami and his team serving one of the remote areas of our country, an accomplishment of its kind, more than atop in the Mt. Everest. Hillary was man of courage & honor. His contribution to Nepal is as high as Mt. Everest, he made Nepal well known to the outside world. his birth is worth to Nepal and will always be remembered as a great friend of Nepal.
He was the greatest mountaineer ever born. His demise is end of an era. May his soul be in Heaven. | | Senior Member | | Posts: 741 Thanks: 20
