Luoyang's largest city park, Wangcheng Park, is worth a visit if you spend any time in the city. The Jian River flows through the park. There is a small zoo, but the park's natural scenery is more of an attraction. An archeaological reconstruction inside the park is also of interest; the buildings are a modern recreation of Zhou Dynasty (1100-221BC) structures. If you are fortunate enough to be in Luoyang when the peony is in flower, the park becomes a must. Peony in bloom is beautify; the Chinese think it brings good luck...

White Horse (Bai Ma) Temple is possibly the oldest Buddhist Temple in China. The name derives from a legend that the Buddhist scriptures (sutras) were carried from India to the site of this temple by a white horse. That event is thought to have taken place about 68AD. The temple was probbaly completed between 70-75AD, in part to house the sutras. Most of the art within the temple dates back to the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368AD). A large statue of Buddha imposes itself upon the temple main hall. And statues of the white horse are common in the region. White Horse Temple is unusual in that it is still a functioning temple, not just a tourist attraction kept up by Communists draw gain tourist Dollars, Yen, and Francs. The temple is viewed by many followers of Buddhism as the "mother church" of Chinese Buddhism. Like most temples in China, White Horse Temple was renovated a number of times. The gate of the temple visitors see today was built during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644AD). The temple has six main structures: Tianwang Hall, Great Buddha Hall, Daxiong Hall, Jieyin Hall, Qingliang Terrace and Pilu Pavilion. Outside of the temple are two life-sized stone horses that date from the Song Dynasty (960-1279AD).
