Approach for Entrance Preparation - 08-02-2006, 12:16 PM

Approach for the Preparation
  • Passed ISc./+2 or Equivalent
  • Studying ISc./+2 or Equivalent
Many students in Nepal doing I.Sc/10+2 OR equivalent with Bio-Group try to choose their career as a Doctor. But not all get the chance to study Medicine. To get enrolled into the medical education and to go through Medical Entrance Examinations one needs to have the determination, the patience and the in-depth knowledge of the subject matter and self study which will help you to fulfil your dream.

The approach means what are your preparation for getting a medical seats to pursue your medical profession and the way you are thinking for the competition. This must be very positive if you are genuinely interested in the Medical Profession. There must be constant dedication and determination with the positive approach and thinking. The competition is so tough that even the brilliants candidates may not succeed in one attempt. So, don't get frustrated and harassed by such minor and almost regular set backs, get up and fight back. That is the over all approach.

Studying ISc./+2 or Equivalent

Well, some may think it is too early but you know the competition demands a very good approach from your intermediate level. The ground level course that almost all the Institutes/University expects you to know in the Entrance Examination is the I.Sc/10+2 OR Equivalent. Therefore, the iron is getting red hot from the very beginning of your intermediate course so start making strong strokes on it to mould as you need to direct your future. You should go for the through study of all the topics (Don't study only the selected topics) and make concept clear, improve your English, do the short answer question as much as you can. They really check your concept about the topic.

Don't worry about the percentage. Very few institutions/universities do consider about your I.Sc/10+2 OR equivalent and SLC percentage. The first worry should be the eligible percentage that is 50% for IOM, BPKIHS and KU while 60% for BPKIHS, MOE and Indian Embassy (see eligibility). So study the texts top to bottom as much as you can. The concept is that matters for your future performance. Yes of course, percentage is other aspects where you also have to think. What you can do is study thoroughly in the beginning and prepare from the exam point of view in the last three or so months. Never depend upon the old questions and notes that teachers have given that will hamper your cognitive skill to extract the gist of the chapter from the books. They are the things that you should take from the examination point of view only.

The Entrance preparation books! Well they will be little burden for you because your course is also not that much easy. The practical, may be tuition's and homework all that make you busy. But if you can that's fine. They are better for you but not must. The utmost thing you can do is to select the standard texts and study with the concept clear and solve the short answer questions. If those texts have Multiple Choice Questions, then try them. This is because almost all of the institutions/universities ask multiple choice questions. But don't deviate from your track i.e. your level.

Passed ISc./+2 or Equivalent

By the time you have given final exam of the Twelve Class/I.Sc Final year OR equivalent, you must have clear vision of your future direction. That means you should be determined for the medicine or any other discipline you are interested in. If you have dilemma or two or more choices at the same time, it will be fatal for you.

This is just like putting two legs in two different boats at the same time. This will indirectly or directly determine your performance. Many of the brilliant students have either been left behind or have been late comers in the medical field due to their dilemma in the decision for the future vision. So, get ready mentally and psychologically by the time you get final exam of the Intermediate level. Then the preparation matters.

If you are completely new to the medical field, join the coaching centers as soon as possible and get information from there. If you are lucky to have doctors/medical professional from your family or any other seniors preparing for the medical entrance examination, please gather information from them. Study with them. Discuss with them. Ask which Coaching center is good for you. Know about the models of questions of the different institutions/Universities. Ask about the study materials. They are the best teachers. If you are sure that your aggregate percentage of the Intermediate level is going to more than 50% (in aggregate of 11 and 12 class or First and Second Year of I.Sc.) and interested to join the medical profession then join the coaching centers OR start preparation from the very day.
[break=Entrance Info]
First of all get the information about the time of entrance examinations and tick the mark in the calendar so that you will know how much time is in your hand. Then arrange orderly the Entrance Examinations because you will know which examination is at the first of all that you are going to face. The next thing is to know the syllabus/the subjects from where the questions are asked of those institutions. Then collect or buy the material accordingly. The first Entrance which is you are going to face must of course be your target of your preparation no matter what time is in your hand. Don't ever get panic. Calm and cool attitude with the full fledge of preparation should be the approach to fight the tough competition like Medicine's in Nepal. Go through the course once then solve the old questions as many times as you can. If you can study the chapters where from questions have been asked frequently, that is the best.

Actually, this is the way to master different entrance examinations. You have very short period of time, solve only the old questions and face the exam. Never get harassed with the score or failure. That's the way you learn to come up with the success. Every time you face the exam, try to recall the questions asked and solve them. If you cannot recall, go to the coaching centers where others like you are found recalling and noting down the questions. Take the questions from there and solve. If you find difficulty, discuss with your friends and teachers at the coaching centers.
[break=Summery]
Make the circle of friends and make a habit of discussing the problems. Then, don't wait for the results to come out. See the calendar for the time left for the next entrance examination to come. Plan the lessons/materials accordingly. Start preparing solving the old questions of that eminent entrance exam, finding the pet chapters and questions and choosing the books accordingly. The coaching centers regularly conduct model entrance exam that is coming near. This is the wonderful platform where you can assess your preparation. Don't miss this. This is more than solving old questions.

Mostly or the Nepali students prepare from the Indian Entrance Preparation books that have the old questions from the Indian institutions. They are very good questions and have higher standard than that of Nepal 's. So, don't miss them. The questions in BPKIHS and Indian Embassy have more or less of similar pattern/standard. You know it will really enjoy the preparation period and by this happy and hectic preparation will end up with some good news that you will be there where you used to dream.

Better join a good coaching center but if you can do self study, it is also OK. Solve the Model Tests regularly conducted by the Coaching centers. This will show your performance and position.
